It’s easy to earn Gold by adding OMAAT as a Google Preferred Source and joining the daily newsletter. Quick note on the daily newsletter: this is a daily rundown of all of our new posts from the day.
Google Preferred Source points will post within a minute. Newsletter confirmations take up to ~30 minutes to post. Both activities will post a confirmation message on the notifications tab of your member profile, points will appear on your activity log in the Membership tab, and Gold status will be instant once those two items post.

Ben and I both loved the idea and set up a section in the forum where Platinum and Diamond members can share their trips. In addition to all of the cool things we’re working on, we still have time to try new things. Keep those community recommendations coming.

More about buying points
After reviewing feedback from some of y’all, we’ve launched a paid membership option for readers who want the benefits of status without participating in the community features. Both Ben and I thought it was important to design a program that allowed readers to unlock loyalty benefits without paying a membership fee before introducing a paid option. Now that the free community-based membership is in full swing, we’re adding a layer for those who want a more streamlined site experience (and for some yet-to-be-named mystery perks), but don’t necessarily want to engage with the comments section.
As of today, you can buy membership points in blocks to top up your community points. We’ve designed the subscription model so you can choose a plan that best fits how you use OMAAT. There are no recurring charges or monthly fees. You can simply top up your account at any time during the year to enjoy benefits for the remaining months at your current status. Prices are prorated in quarterly chunks to reflect that this is not an annual membership. If you’ve already hit Diamond status, we left the option in to contribute to the blog in the profile settings. If you’re channeling Smaug, you will be granted more OMAAT points for each contribution, but we did intentionally deprioritize the button placement in the experience.
For example, if you’re currently a Gold member with 3,000 points, you can buy a Gold package of 2,500 points in September for $50, which will promote you to Platinum status through February 2027. For readers who are self-described lurkers and opting out of community points, you can purchase directly into the Diamond tier.
For those looking to optimize, you can join the daily newsletter list and add OMAAT as a preferred source in Google for a combined 2,500 points, unlocking Gold status before opting to top off your account.
Do you have to purchase a membership?
No, absolutely not. The paid option is available for those who want to remove ads from the site, but it is entirely possible to remove ads with a member account through community activities, like joining the newsletter, at no cost. If you don’t want to earn or buy membership points, nothing changes for you at all. This points system is just another way to engage with the site. Honestly, it's been refreshing to see things evolve a lot in the last few months! I've personally liked all those changes, between the much needed enhancements in the comments section, and the ability to read the site ads free (and the addition of being able to pay to remove ads is great, and not that different from other content providers). It's also nice to see that most of that has been driven by direct feedback...

If you're taking any more enhancements suggestion, I'd love the option to mute specific folks, particularly in the comments section. This isn't to bring any negativity, but I personally find some people so exhausting that it completely discourages me to participate in a lot of discussions (whether it's about political stuff, zero value chatter, stuff like that).

I'm sure he has to give some of his earnings to Boarding Area due to their partnership, and there are so many fees besides the obvious. Hosting, paying web devs, insurance to cover potential legal matters, all attached services, and so on. And that's just the site aspect alone.
My one suggestion would be the speed of the comments section. It takes ages for a comment to be posted, and it's not very intuitive replying to others. Make it so it adds a tag reply so everyone knows who they are replying to.

Yeah -- if there was a flat $20 fee/year I would gladly pay for the site. The complexity of the status levels is confusing. Also -- in order to pay for points, you're looking at over $200! Like sorry, I have loved this site and the content, but $200 for an ad-free experience is insane for the level of content. That's more than a New Yorker subscription annually.

I'm not against the idea of paid status, but I do hope that people in violation of the community guidelines (especially when in comes to racism, sexism, homophobia or harassment) will be told that they can take their money elsewhere.
I'd like to think we're doing much better at moderating today than before we revamped membership, but please use the report button when you see something inappropriate, if you remember. The report option helps us get to issues quickly if something slips through the cracks.

The one functionality I would love (and would definitely pay for) is to be able to automatically blend out posts from certain people.

I was just writing a long, quality comment to provide some constructive feedback, but the page suddenly reloaded to display banner ads I had cleared, and my long comment disappeared with the reload.
Could you find a way to save comment drafts so I won't lose them when the page reloads?
I have an iPhone Air and don't have other Safari tabs or background apps. If it's happening to me, it's happening to a lot of people.
Ah, good flag. I'll work with the ad platform to see if we can just stop that behavior, but saving comments should also be doable - I just want to fix the unwanted behavior rather than patch an unintended experience.
Can you fix the sort issue? Oldest First vs Most Recent shows different replies. Very frustrating.

Gold status can be earned in about 30 seconds, and you'll instantly see fewer ads. If you want a more passive path, buying into a status tier is an option today, and it wasn't yesterday.
I hear the complaints about mobile ads, and I'm going to see what we can do to make that better across the board.

I hope that you reviewed the logs of all comments where an email was provided, the site has/had an annoying behaviour of logging itself out constantly so I never bothered to sign in.

We did fix the logged-in user issue a few weeks back. Once logged in, you should stay logged in for 14 days, which we're looking to expand to 30-days.
As for the paid option, everything is available without payment. The paid option is intended to allow readers who don't want to earn status the ability to purchase it for an ad-free experience. Hopefully you found earning Gold status pretty easy; it was designed to be accessible for everyone.

Hey @kiwi - users need to be logged in for the points to be tracked. We don't store the email address from guest comments alongside the comment, so I have no way to track this. Give your membership activity page a check, though, when you've got a chance.

Is this a joke? Why would I pay for features that make a travel-blog site vaguely functional when that should be the base experience?
Is there a way to filter/sort trip reports by date instead of just search or the borad categories at the top? I was looking for an Emirates post from 2011 but there are quite a few Emirates posts to go through. On mobile, so not sure if that changes the options.

Through this year its been quantity over quality. It shows on the blog posts as its generally about Bens travel life and CC upsells. I get he has a family but you cant be a travel blogger and still be home all the time.....i feel the relevancy is getting lower and there is obivous unknown bias towards unknown financial relationships (i.e. Atmos for example, there has been no coverage of the blunders of AS IT and the roll out...all rosy things....not to mention obvious recent errors in the reporting that a quick check would have been corrected....so why follow ben when we can read the site on alaskaair.com).
For a membership to work...there has to be some real value for the reader.....right now...i am not so sure thats the case.....a simple 100 dollar raffle isnt gonna cut it....how about exclusive airfare discounts (say 5%) etc. This is where you will get the money.

Ever watch something like LA Flights on youtube? Guy livestreams his plane spotting for half the day and there's an audience of thousands that sends in a lot of money in tips. Twitch etc. have similar models. Ben's run a site for decades and pumped out a lot of content - I think he's earned the right to put out a tip jar, which is effectively what this is.
Would I gameify the tip jar differently? Sure. I'd do a "drop me $5" tip jar for bonus points and if you give X number of tips per month you get an additional Y bonus points, and tip for X number of months in a row and get Z bonus points plus an OMAAT luggage tag. Something like that. But hey, not my site!
But, Peter, why would Citi ever need to pay anyone for anything? Citi Nights, 6x ThankYou points on dining, after 6PM EST, only on Fridays and Saturdays, using your Strata Elite, sells itself! /s
I have to agree. There has been an avalanche of ads on Boarding Area blogs. And, in spite of a representation of unbiased coverage, I've seen the bias here & on another very popular hobby blog. If there's news about a change to a loyalty program, fine. But, I feel I can't trust reviews & recommendations any longer. Some reports seem sloppy & error-prone. Commentary seems willing to go to the mat in defense of certain card issuers.

Great question - no. You cannot buy your way onto the leaderboard.
Gotcha - so basically community points are organically earned (and what the leaderboard is reflective of) and membership points are purchased? Makes sense... I'll just view through an AA base / bonus lens.

it is not completely the quantity of ads (sure, we all want less, but understand the bills need to be paid for) but rather the types of ads - the pop-ups, the ones that mess up reading continuity, hard to close, basically the crap that gets in the way of the experience in a manner that, by definition, you go out of your way to avoiding buying anything from the company advertising because their ads...
it is not completely the quantity of ads (sure, we all want less, but understand the bills need to be paid for) but rather the types of ads - the pop-ups, the ones that mess up reading continuity, hard to close, basically the crap that gets in the way of the experience in a manner that, by definition, you go out of your way to avoiding buying anything from the company advertising because their ads are so horrible.
Basically, more and more the ads are getting so invasive (especially on my iPhone) that I am just asking myself how badly do I want to read the article and since this is a hobby, not that badly.

This is constructive feedback. The number of ads we display on a page is well within the industry standard (under, actually), but let me see what I can do about the ad types showing up at any one time. That should be solvable.
The site’s ad load has made it increasingly unreadable. Not sure why I’d start paying to deshittify it rather than visit less.
No need to pay, good adblocks do a great job of keeping this site ad free.

Everyone is talking about Ads. Do you realize there are over 150 trackers tied to the site? I get notified about this every time I visit.
