In recent months, we’ve seen a limited edition “patriotic passport” issued in the United States, prominently featuring President Trump. The Trump administration has now unveiled plans to make permanent changes to the standard passport issued in the United States. There’s good news and bad news, as a lot is changing, so let’s cover the details (thanks to Live and Let’s Fly for flagging this).
What to expect from the new US passport, launching 2028
On September 29, 2026, Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled a redesigned United States passport during the launch of america.gov, which is the Trump administration’s new portal for accessing federal services. The new US passport will be issued starting in 2028, and a lot will be changing.
First, let’s start with the good news. Starting at some point in 2027, Americans will be able to apply for their first passport entirely online, through the new america.gov portal. Passport renewals are already possible online, so the idea is that the same service will extend to initial applications, including even taking your own passport photo with your smartphone. We’ll see what comes of this, but that would certainly be a positive development.
Second, the US passport will start to be standardized with 38 pages. Currently the standard passport has 26 pages, or you can get a larger passport with 50 pages. The idea is that standardizing passport pages is supposed to make things more efficient. Some people will appreciate the larger standard passport, while some frequent travelers may be frustrated by the inability to get a larger passport.
Third, perhaps the most noticeable change will be the design as such. Unsurprisingly, since the Trump administration is behind this, they’re really stepping up the in-your-face “patriotism” of the design. When us Americans enter another country, we need to make sure they damn well know we’re coming from the greatest country on earth!!
The new US passport will be called “Flight of the Eagle,” and it will feature a much larger golden seal than before. “United States of America” will be moved from below the seal to above the seal.
The passport will have artwork covering a variety of aspects of American history, including the fighting at Lexington during the American Revolution, the Wright brothers, the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and American space exploration. The eagle appears in a slightly different position on each page, so the idea is that it has a flipbook effect when you flip through the pages.
Here’s perhaps the most interesting part — a little over nine minutes into the video, Rubio talks about how the new passport will be “a visual story of the greatest nation in the history of the world.” There are then 16 pictures of pages that tell the “story,” and the first picture is of President Trump, with very similar artwork to what you’ll find in Trump’s limited edition “patriotic passport.”
Now, we’ll see what the finished product actually looks like. C’mon, I can’t imagine any president would try to permanently place their own picture in the passport issued by a country… right? Nobody would be that narcissistic… especially a president who doesn’t take a salary, and who truly took the job to make the country better, rather than to enrich himself. So I’ll assume it’s just an error.
My take on the new US passport design & concept
If passport applications can be moved entirely online, I’d say that’s awesome, so kudos to those working on that initiative. If it eliminates all the paperwork and having to go to get a professional passport picture taken, then I’m a fan.
Obviously the switch to the new size passport is a double-edged sword. On balance it’s probably better for everyone to have more pages, though for super frequent travelers, losing up to 12 extra pages will be less than ideal.
Regarding the new design, well… what can I really say?

I suppose more countries are adopting digital immigration processing (no more stamps, boo hoo), and that may lessen the blow, having less pages. I am always upfront about being a US citizen, having been in France, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand during Trump administrations. Never have I been given grief over this. I feel it my obligation for them to see US visitors who are bright, pleasant, well-informed, and politically non-extreme. I have become good at faking the first three. There might be situations where hiding my citizenship might be wise, but I've never felt that in any country above.

Mine was about a year from expiry and I renewed online recently (and thankfully) it only took a few weeks, super easy.
There is no rule against early renewal of a passport. On the other hand, you can always "lose" your passport and apply for a new one.
As VS says, you can replace your passport anytime you want. You can’t do it online unless it’s within a year of expiring.

Renewals can already be done online (helped my parents with their renewals last year) so I'm not sweating that part. It was real easy to get it done. I'll do mine in April after I get back from Vancouver.
Glad to hear it went smoothly for them, Samar. While the current online renewal option is great, it’s still somewhat limited, like, can't use it if you're outside that one-year expiration window, need a name change, or ran out of pages due to heavy travel. Hopefully, future rollouts expand to cover those scenarios, too. Safe travels on the Vancouver trip!
The need for many pages in a passport is going away quickly....the vast majority of countries now dont give you a stamp....so i think even say 20 pages should be sufficient. I would even say the passport will just be a card by the end of the decade.

Good advice. Trump on passport: bad. Sweating the silly stuff like this: time waste. I'd prefer not having any living politicians on my passport. Mine expires at the start of 2028, so I'll avoid this. But, if it gets changed early and I get this: oh, well. I'm not going to be searching through new currency to avoid getting the new ones with the grand egoist's signature. I'll be calmer just ignoring it.

I do have a question- I've wondered if someone can renew their passport before it's fully expired. Like, if you have a long trip coming up and want to get it over with, can you self-renew earlier if you so desire? There don't seem to be many results for this.
Of course you can. Some countries will not allow you in if your passport has less than 6 months validity, so you'd have to renew it minimum 6 months before it expires.
I just renewed my passport and had an expiration date of 2027 but due to over lapping extensive travel I needed to renew now. I filled out the application online but had to submit via mail, not a big deal. I was totally amazed that my new passport arrived within a week of submission.

There are circumstances where you can have two active passports (or at least there used to be) -- if you travel to certain countries where having a stamp from one keeps you out of another or if you frequently travel and have to send your passport for visas. You can also have two different kinds of passports at once - an official (gov employee) or diplomatic and a regular "blue" at the same time in which case you have to leave and enter on the same one.
@AD you can renew online at one year from expiration, not 6 months. The reminder email will come at 6 months, though.
You can replace your passport at any time. The state department won’t reject your passport application because you have, say, 4 years of validity left.
You just can’t renew online if it is over a year from expiration, or if you have a name change or significant change in your physical appearance, including surgeries, injuries, major weight loss/gain and so on.

Worst case scenario - a lost, stolen or damaged passport must be replaced. So if you honestly lose your passport of your passport is honestly damaged, you gotta get a new one. Now.
Like WaywardAlpaca (and others) have mentioned, if it's within one year, you can renew online; however, for those lost, stolen, damaged, (or if out of pages for stamps/visas), regardless of time frame, may still need to go in-person. Wish that could be online, too. If yours is ever lost/stolen while traveling outside the US, helpful to know where nearest consulate/embassy is for emergency passport (may also need a police report.) Not fun.
Could someone please explain to me the merit of all those picture pages anyway? Are these pages like watermarked with these pictures which will eventually carry stamps and visas and whatever or are they meant to remain like what they appear: picture pages ?

The picture pages have no functional merit. You have to remember that these Trumpists are like lobsters in a trap, scratching and clawing at each other as they try to rise to the top and prove to deal leader Don that they love him the most.
Does anyone know, which other countries have a whole bunch of useless pages in their passport just depicting the history of that country or something? There's less and less need for visa pages, expanding the standard size is a move in the wrong direction. Fewer countries are stamping at all (e.g. Canada) and those that do are taking less space. The US doesn't even stamp for re-entry anymore - that by itself is an automatic 50% reduction.
My experience with Germany recently is that they don't maintain their passport readers, such that they filled up an entire page with 2 entry and 2 exit stamps on 2 stopovers....

Why would anyone need more pages these days? It's becoming increasingly rare to get stamps unless you happen to frequently travel to a specific country that still uses them or still use physical visas in the passport.

Stopovers in certain countries can still fill up a passport quickly---I have had Germany stamp my passport 4 times recently, 2 entries and 2 exits, as their passport readers have been inoperative. No passport stamps with multiple entries to Spain and France, though...I will not plan to enter Europe through Germany now....I've already had to replace a 10 year passport after 5 years because it filled up...

I am delighted to be renewing my passport next month. Nothing would make me more angry than having to carry a passport with the orange idiot’s picture in it for the next decade. Hope I will avoid that fate!

If it’s up for renewal in 2029 there is every chance that you won’t have to worry about it after the 2028 election I can’t imagine a blue president would let this stay around I feel the same way though I just renewed mine last year thankfully so it’s good for a while.

The six pointed star was on older passports as well. Also, looking more closely, within the six pointed design are 13 smaller stars representing the original colonies.
