Miami International Airport (MIA) is my home airport — I love it for its close proximity to the city, and dislike it for… well, just about everything else. The airport is in the news yet again, and for once, it’s not because a fight broke out in the terminal, or because the people mover is broken for months. Rather, it’s because of something even stranger…
In this post:
Mysterious green liquid all over Miami Airport terminal
At around 9AM on Thursday, July 4, 2024, Concourse G at Miami Airport suddenly had green liquid pouring from the ceiling, causing it to spread all over the terminal floor. As you’d expect, many passengers were concerned. While leaks happen, what on earth would cause a strange green liquid to be coming out of the ceiling?
Airport staff were quickly able to determine that the source of the green liquid was a burst pipe, and that it wasn’t hazardous. The mess in the terminal was cleaned up within about 90 minutes.
So, what exactly was this very strange liquid? As it turns out, there’s a pretty logical explanation. The liquid was actually water from the AC system, but it has a green dye in it. The reason for the dye is so that if there’s ever a leak, it can be traced to its source. Well, I guess in this case that explains why they were able to trace the source so quickly, and rule out an alien invasion. 😉
Speaking of Miami Airport and air conditioning…
I’m not sure if it has yet been determined why the air conditioning pipes burst at Miami Airport, though I sure have a theory — the terminal is consistently kept at (what feels like) arctic temperatures, so I imagine the air conditioning works overtime in summer.
I’m usually pretty immune to temperature fluctuations. Ford jokes that I have an internal air conditioning and heating system. However, every single time that I enter Miami Airport, I’m freezing. So even if I’m traveling in summer and am going to a warm destination, you’ll always see me at the airport in a hoodie (the most underrated travel essential, as I see it).
Bottom line
Miami Airport celebrated July 4th not with red and blue, but rather with green, as an air conditioning pipe burst in the terminal. While I think a green liquid oozing from the ceiling would understandably freak out most people, the explanation is simply that the airport puts dye in the water in the air conditioning system, so that any leaks can be traced. It worked out, in this case.
What’s your take on this Miami Airport green liquid incident?
ROFL about the hoodie! I love them as well, as an "absolute essential." If not the A/C, then for protection from the BUGS in FL!!!
Re the temp at MIA - disagreed! I’m always hot and it’s easier to cover up than to get undressed at an airport :)
All sorts of leakage everywhere! The last time I was at MIA, a stream of liquid was coming from the ceiling in the Centurion Lounge. It was raining but not much. They set out a bunch of buckets before finally closing off the area and getting maintenance in.
Miami is a world class city, and MIA is a world class airport. In every sense.
Bumpin’ that
I always say that the Miami airport is almost like being in the United States
Waiting for someone to explain why this is because of DEI or DeSantis.
Seems like you're the only one to bring it up.
Most people know MIA's problems all stem from a corrupt local government who uses the airport/its contracts as their kickback piggy bank. They don't care about the state of this third world airport, just their wallets.
I don't believe the AC explanation for one second. It's clear to me that Slimer has finally retired and moved from New York to South Florida. Expect to see Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd running through the airport at any moment.
MMW, I’m afraid that you could be wrong about the source of the slime infestation.
I’m sure the photograph is of the newly elected British Prime Minister …. he is a slimy character with a profile lower than a snake’s belly.
Those who think their profile is important tend to end up as a poor choice to lead.
