Delta Employees Mask Up In New Covid-Era Safety Video

Delta Employees Mask Up In New Covid-Era Safety Video

31

Delta Air Lines has just released its new safety video, and it’s entirely unremarkable, except for one thing.

Delta’s coronavirus safety video

Delta has released some creative safety videos in the past, though the Atlanta-based carrier’s newest video is kind of boring in comparison. There’s only one thing that makes it interesting, which is that it actually reflects the times, as everyone in the video is wearing masks, and mask-related safety announcements are integrated into the video.

You can watch the four minute video here:

We’ve seen some other airlines introduce new safety videos during the pandemic, though in almost cases they didn’t actually reflect the times, and people in the videos weren’t masked. That’s fair enough, since we don’t know how long current regulations will remain in place.

To my knowledge Delta is the first airline to have a safety video that fully reflects coronavirus regulations. Most airlines have screened their standard safety videos, and then afterwards there’s an announcement about mask regulations, how you have to remove any face coverings before putting on your oxygen mask, etc. That’s all explained in this video.

Odd timing for a new Delta safety video?

I find it surprising that Delta has released this new safety video over 15 months into the pandemic. Currently the federal transportation mask mandate is in place through September, so it’s possible we could see airplane mask regulations loosened in just over two months. In that sense the timing seems interesting.

Also, while I can appreciate the desire to show both employees and customers wearing masks correctly, perhaps a safety video is a situation where it would be easier for the person speaking to not wear a mask (while distanced from others), given that it’s often easier to understand what someone is saying when you can see their lips move.

I’m curious if this new video is just intended to be screened for as long as the mask mandate is in place, or if a couple of versions were filmed, so that the video can easily be edited based on how the situation evolves.

Bottom line

Delta has just released its newest safety video, and to my knowledge Delta is the first airline to have a safety video with everyone wearing masks. While I see merit to this in general, the timing seems strange, since we’re potentially just over a couple of months from masks no longer being mandatory on planes.

What do you make of Delta’s new safety video?

Pandemic's over. Y'all can stop with the fear. Want to wear masks forever? That's fine, get yourself an N-95 and wear one yourself. July 4 is national mask burning day, mark your calendar!

I don't mind wearing a mask on planes honestly. Not that they work but it does help not smelling the person next to me. Unless they fart. Gross

Careful, you might catch some germs from the video.

I'm getting ready for my first flight in about 4 years. I appreciated seeing the information before getting to the airport.

Why don’t you spell it COVID?

I just hope the video finally clarifies whether or not you're allowed to take off the paper mask to put on the oxygen mask in the event of an emergency. Or if you're supposed to put it on over or under the oxygen mask. Just don't want to get dragged off the plane by the police in the event we don't crash into the runway.

Once the first Airline drops the requirement when the Feds let up they all will. This is a temp CYA that's all it is. Distancing is the deciding factor with viral pathogens mask science didn't magically change just this year. When the flu and colds spread this fall many will realize how useless they were. It's a feel good..Look at me I care virtue signal and that's all. How many will admit it when it's...

This is a sign that wearing a mask is never going to end ever on planes. Many people keep telling me that it will all be over in September, but clearly COVID has permanently changed air travel like 911 did. Soon, all airlines will have new safety videos with masks. The pandemic is over, we have reached heard immunity. Sadly, just like 911, COVID has changed the way we fly forever. So I guess we...

Bottom line is, masks are not ever going away. We will never get to fly without a mask ever again.

      Er...nope. Not even close.

I concur with the other comments—This is actually not the first iteration of DL’s COVID-era safety video. What strikes me, however, is how stark the contrast is between the June video and the one that had been playing through May. In the previous version, the entire safety video was literally split-screen with clips of DL staff wiping down the surfaces of tray tables, kiosks, etc. Even Ed’s intro was a little more bleak—“The world has...

This isn't new for Delta. They released an updated one in January with those in the video masked. But that one seemed a bit more rushed. This one is a bit better. But also, pre-COVID Delta tended to do a new safety video every 6-12 months that was quite basic, and they were running their old habitat for humanity safety video for a long time into 2020.

I suspect this one will only run through the end of the year before being replaced by another one (I do wish they would bring back the cartoon one they released when the A220 was launched).

There's always subtitles (usually English and Spanish) whenever they play it on board, both before COVID and during it.

@Claus Andersen, There's more than just death. Some people have long term brain fog. Of course, that may be good because then you would qualify to be President.

Long covid, as some are calling it, happens in 10% of people. That is nothing to laugh at.

What are we talking about? Is today Friday? No, that was yesterday. Today is Tuesday. And Abraham Lincoln is the President of the United States.

You were brainwashed. When people are offered free beer, gift cards, sports tickets, etc… as an incentive to get a vaccine that the Government says it works, keeping a mask mandate goes against all that. Make masks optional and if you trust the Government that the vaccine works, get back to life. The more they keep forcing people to wear masks they buy at Etsy with their team logo on it, the less people will trust the vaccine.

I actually fully agree at this point - any hey, Darwinism will have its way with all the anti-vaxxers out there

Etihad has a fully covid/ masked safety video. You posted it a few months ago.

This one is awful. Pure virtue signaling. Not interested

Delta has been running another video prior to this the past year with everyone wearing masks as well.

We celebrate that the pandemic is ending by trying to scare people to still wear masks and be scared os a virus that kills 2% of those who get it.

What worthless signaling. And yes, Ben - we know you appreciate. "One Mask at a Time" has gone above and beyond to keep us all safe during these challenging times.

All this year Delta's pre flight safety videos have shown the attendant wearing masks.

Well, given the news coming out today it may be we are wearing them for a lot longer. This is not over. https://www.wsj.com/articles/vaccinated-people-account-for-half-of-new-covid-19-delta-cases-in-israeli-outbreak-11624624326

Global airlines like Delta will almost certainly retain mask requirements for at least the next two years. Even as the worst of the pandemic subsides in the US, it rages on nearly everywhere else in the world. Maintaining a mask requirement is the easiest preventative measure (and legal CYA requirement) an airline can mandate, so consider wearing them on planes THE new normal.

    1. EC2 Guest

Agree. It’s going to be the new CYA normal. Didn’t watch video from this site and never watch them on the plane if there is IFE screens. Don’t care whether they have masks on or off.

    2. Juan Guest

I'm totally fine still wearing a mask indoors while vaccinated, and it should be normalized. Masks are good for more than just COVID, and its been nice not getting sick over the last year and a half because of mask mandates and social distancing.

Pre-COVID, masks were commonplace in many parts of the globe if you were sick or traveling. Amazing how some people get triggered over a simple mask.

    3. Aussie Guest

The choice to wear a mask indoors while vaccinated should be normalised.

We don’t live in a dictatorship, and if we did it wouldn’t be run by a paralysed with fear fairy.
