Daily Getaways Promotion Discontinued: Not A Huge Loss?

Daily Getaways Promotion Discontinued: Not A Huge Loss?

8

While I can’t say that I’ll be shedding any tears, a longstanding annual travel promotion will be discontinued as of this year…

Daily Getaways won’t return as of 2025

Since 2010, we’ve seen the annual Daily Getaways promotion, run by the US Travel Association. This was intended to encourage tourism within the United States. With this, we saw Daily Getaways partner with major hotel groups, rental car companies, theme parks, etc., to offer discounted travel packages.

These promotions came in different forms, from vouchers for travel experiences, to points packages, to discounted gift cards. For example, here’s a look at the 2024 promotion, which gives you a sense of the types of packages that were available.

For most OMAAT readers, the most exciting option was probably the opportunity to purchase points at an attractive cost with programs like Best Western Rewards, Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, World of Hyatt, Wyndham Rewards, and more.

Anyway, after 15 years, it looks like this promotion will no longer be offered, as flagged by Danny the Deal Guru. The Daily Getaways webpage has been updated to indicate that the program has been discontinued as of 2025.

Daily Getaways won’t return in 2025

I can’t say that I view this as a huge loss

When the Daily Getaways promotion launched back in 2010, it was pretty awesome:

  • Many hotel loyalty programs didn’t directly, aggressively, sell points at the time, so Daily Getaways was by far the best way to get a good deal on many points currencies
  • There wasn’t that much competition for the available travel packages, so if you were quick, it was typically possible to take advantage of the limited packages

Over time, both of those advantages have changed considerably, though. For one, the packages available through Daily Getaways weren’t as remarkable as before, compared to what was offered directly by programs.

Furthermore, for those packages that were lucrative, there was just too much competition. For example, there were always a very limited number of World of Hyatt points packages, which actually represented a very good deal. However, it’s clear that some people set up scripts to buy these, and almost no one actually reported success without that. So it almost became a lottery of sorts, and a bit of a waste of time.

I was always curious about how the economics of Daily Getaways worked. Presumably the US Travel Association was taking a cut on sales, so I wonder just how much the travel partners were paid for things like points packages.

Daily Getaways offered travel packages

Bottom line

After roughly 15 years, the Daily Getaways promotion is being discontinued. This US Travel Association offer provided ways to buy discounted travel packaged, including points. I’m not surprised that this promotion ran its course. While I took advantage of it quite a bit in the early 2010s, I can’t say that I paid much attention to it in recent years.

What do you make of Daily Getaways being discontinued?

I bought Choice Hotel points last year and (combined with points from my Citi ThankYou points account) used them in... Japan. Really good deal (hotel costs around 8000 points)

I disagree with you on this one. As someone who never gets targeted for the Hilton promotions on buying points (240k+240k for $2,400), it was an easy way to score a considerable number of Hilton points to boost my account t for high value redemptions like the Conrad Maldives.

Most years were unique & wonderful opportunities to buy cheap Omni Hotel nights. Combined with top status (earned from the previous year’s cheap nights) meant $200 weekends in huge suites in unique locations for me (Mt Washington, Homestead West Virginia, brand new PGA Resort). A great run, will surely miss it!

I will miss it...I was about to get Marriott vouchers for 20% off and over the years I bought tens of thousands of Choice points..I saved thousands of dollars at NYC hotels using them. Also the OMNI hotel vouchers were good deals.
All good things come to an end.

    Good riddance.

It was always an over hyped scam. Impossible to get the Hyatt points except for some insiders or bots.

It is a huge loss. Maybe not for the Hyatt-blind blogosphere, but this was a great way to stay in unique preferred hotels by choice for a big discount, away from the points crowd who ruin unique hotels.

You cant buy choice points from choice for 0.5cpm

I used to be too poor to even purchase these discounted deals. Now as name partner IDGAF about these deals because I buy and stay wherever I want. Isn’t big law great? (Annual profit per partner >$5MM)

I worked with (not for) US Travel Association back in the 2010's and I remember being in their office one day a Hyatt deal went live and the staff said people kept calling asking why it sold out so quickly.

Anyways.... US Travel is a lobbying organization for the travel industry, but they are a non profit. They raise money I am sure through membership fees mainly, but for Daily Getaways the industry partners...

They raise money I am sure through membership fees mainly, but for Daily Getaways the industry partners would "donate" these packages, points, ect. to US Travel as a way for them to raise funds. In return I am sure US Travel would have a list of things they would be lobbying congress for on your behalf if you participated in the program.
