American Airlines Ups Economy Snack Game With Goldfish, Tate’s Cookies, And More

38

American Airlines has announced that it will update its complimentary economy snack offerings. While nothing major, it’s a reminder of how little, positive changes can impact the perception passengers have…

American introducing more economy snack options

American serves complimentary snacks to travelers in economy, offered with the beverage service. Up until now, the choice has been either Biscoff cookies or unbranded pretzels. That will soon be changing, with a sweet and savory option always available:

  • On morning flights, passengers will have the option of Biscoff cookies or Goldfish
  • For the rest of the day, passengers will have the option of Tate’s Bake Shop chocolate chip cookies or Peterson’s savory and sweet snack mix

The new offerings are expected to be available starting in early October 2026. Here’s how Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, describes this change:

“Small details can make a meaningful difference in the travel experience, especially the familiar touches customers look forward to throughout their journey. As we looked at our snack offerings, we wanted to take the time to get this refresh right by listening to customer feedback and understanding what customers value most. This updated lineup brings together beloved favorites and new choices in a way that feels familiar, elevated and enjoyable.”

American is rolling out new complimentary snacks in economy

Kudos, this is a minor but positive change for American

Obviously this individual change isn’t going to get anyone to book American. However, this is a minor update that a vast majority of customers will appreciate, since it’s not something just reserved for a limited number of routes, for a few lounges, etc. It’s great to see the pace at which American is rolling out positive changes across cabins. American management of course finally realizes how far behind it has fallen in recent years, and the extent to which customers care.

I commend American management for these changes. Of course it has to acknowledged that the reason we’re seeing so many positive changes as of late is because management was asleep at the wheel for many years when it comes to customer experience, and most of what we’re seeing is just a copy and paste of what the competition is doing.

So I don’t want to be too nice for simply doing the obvious, when it’s most of the same people who have been there all along, and were also responsible for things going in the opposite direction. But hey, a positive change is a positive change, and I’m happy to see this.

Bottom line

As of October 2026, American will be improving the snacks it serves in economy. Rather than just serving Biscoffs and unbranded pretzels all day, we’ll see the option of Biscoffs of Goldfish in the morning, and of Tate’s Bake Shop chocolate chip cookies and Peterson’s savory and sweet snack mix the rest of the day. Keep it coming, American!

What do you make of American’s new economy snacks?

Shit on AA all you want, I just booked ORD>PHX over the Christmas holidays for $268 r/t.

  2. James S Guest

One of the united options is vegan, peanut free and gf. Wonder why AA couldn't be bothered to match

  3. SD Guest

Actually afternoon flights people will have 3 options; goldfish, cookies, or savory snack mixes and morning flights people will get goldfish or biscoff

How exactly is feeding food-like products that drive obesity an improvement?

    1. jetset Diamond

Having more appealing options for a snack if you otherwise didn't bring food with you is an improvement.

Emphasis on OPTION - no one is forcing anyone to eat these snacks. People need to take responsibility for their own health and eating decisions.

If they had healthy, fresh snack options (which they wouldn't from a cost perspective), I can almost guarantee that would be the lowest popularity selection and the food waste (assuming perishable) would be significant.

Why doesn’t AA hire a nutritionist for all of a month if they claim they want to get it right? Sounds more like the customer experience VP asked her 6-year old what the snack offering should be.

    1. UncleRonnie Diamond

This is still AA. Sugary snacks are cheap. The nutritionally healthy versions cost a lot more.

Great. Ill take two while I’m waiting for someone to marshall us in and marshall us out. Can I take some with me when they’ve blown my connection?

    1. Eskimo Guest

You cannot use the term blown in air travel.

Power trip gestapo will put you in snowflake jail.

Ineptly run companies. American has raised prices, to levels higher than other airlines, stick it to the customer and by the way, give them less. When Covid hit, they were crying to the government, please help us! Trump, go after them

An improvement but still no gluten free options being offered unlike United and JetBlue which both offer at least 1 if not more gluten free options for their complimentary snack in economy. Some of us have food allergies and even the Admirals Club lounges rarely have gluten free options these days.

It's people like you that makes aspects of my job a royal pain. We never worried about allergens until whiners like you came around. Now companies that I audit have to pander to you and I have to check allergen control programs. We shouldn't have to provide you with special food just because of your tummy aches. As for the allergy, maybe the universe and Darwin are sending you a message.

    2. Eskimo Guest

      Allergies are not by choice.

And the only message I'm getting from Darwin is that he's wrong.
Idiots are breeding offsprings like crazy just to neglect them and they breed like crazy too, just look at reddit or TikTok.

Natural selection works. But doesn't mean the better ones are selected.

About one percent of Americans *need* a gluten-free diet.
The rest of you should bring your own damn snacks.

I know I'm weird but I actually really like the pretzels they currently have. It's a great accompaniment to any drink in the afternoon/evening. Wish they'd keep that option.

I am of an age where I can remember a "morning snack" on Western Airlines 2 hour flight was a box with a cinnamon roll, yoghurt and orange juice".
The afternoon snack on PSA Seattle to SFO was a box with a turkey sandwich, condiments, a bag of chips and a packaged cookie.
God I Am Old !!! LOL ( and we complained about the turkey !)

The liability issues revolving around peanut allergies means the end of peanuts on a sealed metal tube.

    2. Eskimo Guest

Allergic to dog hairs doesn't mean the end of anything on a sealed metal tube.

Liabilities are total BS compared to can't prove ADA.

Noticed recently that Delta, um, ur, sorry, 'Endeavor,' doesn't even serve Biscoff up-front. Nope. Milano cookies, instead. 'Pepperidge Farm remembers...'

I mean I'll take it! Interestingly, the Tate's cookies are considered a premium snack (only available to EvenMore customers) at jetBlue

  13. Adam Guest

Expanding from two options to four and they still can’t make a single one of them gluten free? Disappointing.

  14. ORD_Is_My_Second_Home Diamond

I like Goldfish and Tate's cookies. Better than Biscoff, the Official Cookie of Hell, and, dare I say it, stroopwaffles. Tip of the cap to AA.

    1. jetset Diamond

I don't understand the obsession with Tate's. They're awful - who likes dry, hard chocolate chip cookies?

A good chocolate chip cookie is slightly crispy around the edge and soft in the middle. I will die on this hill lol

  15. Brian Guest

Flew NCE to FCO today with a full meal in J on a 50 minute flight. AA can’t even offer meals in F on 3 hour flights. Goldfish crackers does not elevate the experience.

  16. Michael SEA Gold

Not that I'm choosing to fly AA anytime soon, but those Tate's mini chocolate chip cookies are
    soooooo good!

  17. Caleb New Member

Finally upping their game since even Southwest has better snacks at this point than the stale pretzels they serve.

  18. George Romey Guest

Setting how bad this food is for you that sound much better than what you get in the first class snack basket.

AA is cooked. Who gives an F about junk food? As if American needs more of it anyways.

Also rather small things like that contribute to the overall experience improving.

The idea that goldfish crackers leads to an "elevated" experience is wild.
