IHG has just released their new PointBreaks list, so if you might be interested in making a booking, check out the list now (especially as IHG hadn’t made a full review list available, so most of the list comes as a surprise to us).

IHG’s revamped PointBreaks promotion

At the beginning of the year IHG revamped their PointBreaks promotion. This is a promotion they’ve been offering on a quarterly basis for years, which allows you to book select hotels for just 5,000 points per night. Given that I value IHG points at ~0.5 cents each, that’s the equivalent of paying just ~$25 per night for a hotel room, which is a steal.

The issue is that the quality of the hotels on the lists had been gradually decreasing over the years, to the point that many of us didn’t even bother trying with the promotion anymore. It was great if you happened to be traveling to somewhere that had a PointBreaks hotel, but otherwise just wasn’t worth going out of your way for.

So IHG changed up their PointBreaks promotion earlier this year, and more specifically, now charges 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 points per night through PointBreaks. IHG is promising that they’ll offer more hotels than in the past, and presumably higher quality hotels as well.

The next PointBreaks list has just gone live, and is valid for stays through September 30, 2018. The better hotels tend to sell out pretty quickly (as there are capacity constraints), so you’ll want to book sooner rather than later.

You can also use Cash & Points

Now that some PointBreaks hotels cost 10,000 and 15,000 points per night, you can redeem part points and part cash for these bookings, to lower the price by 5,000 to 10,000 points per night. The price varies by property, but typically you can expect to pay about $50 to lower the cost by 5,000 points, and to pay $80 to lower the cost by 10,000 points. Personally I don’t think this represents a very good deal.

Using the IHG credit card & buy points promo

While this is a great promotion, there are potentially two ways to get even more value out of it. Specifically, if you have the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card then you get the fourth night free on award redemptions, including on PointBreaks bookings.

Also, if you don’t have any IHG points it could make sense to buy them with up to a 100% bonus through a promotion they’re running right now. That’s an opportunity to acquire IHG points for as little as 0.5 cents each.

IHG’s new PointBreaks list

Below is the full list of IHG hotels on the list. As you can see, this time around there are only three InterContinentals on the list, in Al Khobar, Buenos Aires, and Doha. I can’t say I’m terribly impressed by this list, but I guess that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, since this is for stays over the summer.

  1. It is good to see a couple of Australian locations for a change. I booked Crowne Plaza Manila at 5,000 points plus $30.

  2. *yawn*

Very underwhelming. Good if your travel brings you to the Middle east in the middle of summer, and sorry for you.

  3. So in August – September I’ll be doing a bit of traveling. Let’s see what we’ve got: Japan: one property. Hong Kong: zero properties. Vietnam: zero properties. Thailand: zero properties. Total for countries with combined population of several hundred million and IHG hotels in all major cities: one property.

  4. @Julian Intercontinental Buenos Aires.

In Lucky’s preview post he stated the 4th night is free. I booked a couple weeks and it didn’t take off the 4th night. Is it a refunded once you stay?

  5. Is it just me or is the window shorter this time around compared to previous windows. normally the promotion would work on stays until the end of April for Q1, July for Q2, October for Q3 and January for Q4. Am I missing something here? Shouldn’t that be considered a devaluation?

  6. Very disappointing for me personally. We could always get a property in the Knoxville/Oak Ridge area along with southern Kentucky and southwest Virginia. We did this every spring and fall. Now, same as last quarter, none of these properties are on the list at any “price”. So glad I signed up for the IHG rewards card…NOT.

  7. Just got half off Holiday Inn Montreal Centre-ville Ouest (30k -> 15k per night), where we’d already booked for three nights. This round of points breaks works out pretty well for us, and it was easy for them to adjust our preexisting reservation over the phone.

  8. Is IHG kidding? For previous pointbreaks, the hotels I got were standard. No complaints.

This time around, look at the list of hotels. I’ve stayed in some of these before, and they are the absolute dregs of the system. Just look at their reviews.

Worst of all is probably that HI Dublin/Pleasanton (former Radisson). The only pointbreaks hotel in N. Calif. and I swear it is the worst HI I have ever stayed in.

How worthless is IHG making their points? I no longer use my IHG credit card, even when staying at IHG properties!

  9. Croydon isn’t too bad if you want a bargain base for London. Whilst nit the best area it’s 15mins on extremely frequent trains to a choice of terminals from East Croydon snd has plenty of shopping and amenities in its own right. It’s also only 15mins to Gatwick Airport so night before a flight it’s a good option too

  10. This (IHG) loyalty program is getting worse and worse every quarter. It is sad to see once very flourishing program has turned into a crappy one due to the poor decisions from their higher management.

  11. Agree with others; pointsbreak is a shadow of what used to be a good promotion , when it had hundred of properties all at 5,000. I haven’t had a ‘hit’ for where I’m going/want to be for 3 years.
IHG has some fans but I’m rapidly losing interest in it. The mainstream program is insufficiently rewarding during paid stays and the associated Ambassador deal for ICs is ok, but there aren’t enough ICs to make it really worthwhile (. Or, they are not as good/more expensive than other providers).
They need to overhaul the whole program if they are to remain competitive.

  12. this is the reason why even though 100% sales on points with ihg, i’m not buying. Also, haven’t had a chance to use my remained 100k points with ihg in the last 12 months.

  13. While I’m not a huge IHG loyalist, I was happy to see one of the hotels I was scoping in the Chicago area for half price. Was able to book 3 nights there for our trip to drop DD off at college next month. ‘Course that means I still have points that aren’t worth very much to figure out how to use elsewhere but I’ll take that.
