The Amex Offers program has just rolled out a great new targeted offer for the purchase of Virgin Atlantic flights, which could be worth considering for anyone planning a transatlantic trip.

Save $250 on a Virgin Atlantic itinerary

With a new targeted Amex Offers deal, you can earn a $250 statement credit when you spend $1,800 or more with Virgin Atlantic by September 30, 2024.

Spend $1,800+ with Virgin Atlantic, get $250 back

There are some terms to be aware of:

  • The flight needs to be booked directly through the Virgin Atlantic website
  • The flight needs to originate in the United States and be charged in USD
  • While you need to book by September 30, 2024, it’s okay if you travel on subsequent dates
  • The offer is not valid for purchases by phone, at terminals, lounges, or on-board flights

It’s possible that there’s also a version of the offer for 25,000 bonus Membership Rewards points if spending $1,800+. If so, I’d definitely prefer that offer, since I value Amex points at 1.7 cents each, so those points would be worth $425 to me.

While I can’t guarantee it, I suspect that carrier imposed surcharges on award tickets will likely trigger this offer, given that they should be processed the same as any other airfare purchase.

Ideally you’ll see this offer on the Amex Platinum

This offer is targeted, though it’s possible you’ll see it on multiple of your Amex cards. If so, I’d highly recommend registering The Platinum Card® from American Express (review) for this offer. That’s because the Amex Platinum offers 5x points on airfare purchased directly with airlines (on up to $500,000 of flight purchases per calendar year, and then 1x).

I value Membership Rewards points at 1.7 cents each, so to me those points alone are worth an incremental 8.5% return. On top of that, the Amex Platinum offers excellent travel protection should you experience irregular operations.

In other words, if you took advantage of this offer with the Amex Platinum for an $1,800 ticket, you’d earn a total of 9,000 Membership Rewards points plus $250 cash back. That’s awesome.

Bottom line

There’s a new targeted Amex Offers deal for $250 back when you spend $1,800+ on a Virgin Atlantic purchase. If you’re planning travel on Virgin Atlantic, this has the potential to be a great deal. Ideally, you’ll see this offer on the Amex Platinum so that you can really maximize your points.

Were you targeted for this Amex Offer, and if so, do you plan on taking advantage of it?

Surprisingly I don't see this offer in any of my Amex card including platinum/gold. Lately I have been using Virgin points for most of my Europe travels.

To me the best use of this would be on awards bookings upper class (2 tickets) where the fees are over $1000.

Otherwise I’m not sure I’d call this an amazing deal. Might find a better cash price on Amex Travel.

If it was points it'd be interesting. This is at most a 14% off coupon. 25k Amex MR would could easily return $500 to $750 in value, if not more.

How do you find this promotion? I logged into my FlyingBlue account and don't see anything anywhere.

explain why you'd seen this in your FlyingBlue account - it's likely targeted at US cards

Can you reach out to VS and figure out what is going on with their AF/KLM IT issues? I heard they were coding them as revenue fares which is why award space was so good.
