American allows club access not only on the premium transcon LAX and SFO to JFK routes (comparable to United to EWR), but you also get lounge access when flying from SNA to JFK and from LAX to BOS with American. That makes a BIG difference, especially since United and American are the only two clubs at SNA. Further, United doesn't offer lie flat to EWR from SNA while American does. So from SNA you have a club and a better flight experience with American versus United. The same is true for BOS from LAX, although occasionally United will run a lie flat from there, but again, no club access. These differences make American a better value and better choice overall on these routes.
