@ chris w -- They're all subscription services, so presumably the hope is that people keep their membership for more than a year (either because they like it, or because they forget to cancel). It's no different than a credit card with the annual fee waived the first year.
Best way to maximize is the lifelock family plan 2 adults + 2 kids. $479.99 for 45,599 points!
So be sure to use a virtual credit card number if you don't want to re-up at full price next year, and don't want to have to remember to cancel.
FYI for anyone planning to buy because they need to use Amex points soon. Rakuten is estimating my points will settle and transfer to Amex in September.
I've been too cheap to try it, although I don't see any exclusions for that plan, so I would think so... would be 71,249 points for $749.99 at 1.05cpp... hard to beat...

hey Ben - I've purchased points this way in Rakuten's previous promotion. now I saw the same promotion returns, I wonder if I can buy again, albeit registering a different account for that specific vendor and still qualify for the points with Rakuten? The term is "Limited to one per Rakuten member." I don't know if this one refers to one account can only earn bonus from this vendor once or only one time during this specific promotion period.
