Hyatt's big drawback is that you can't waitlist. Unless you're someone that books months out, the benefit is mostly not available. I know in theory they should give you a suite anyway, in practice that doesn't happen
Anecdotally the most luck I have with getting good Marriott upgrades has been when checking in at something like 11pm for a one-night stay, i.e., when they are sure the suite won't get otherwise purchased
Sadly that's when I can get the least use
I've had better luck in general getting upgrades (including suites) with Hilton Diamond than Marriott Platinum, though on my last trip I got upgraded to a Junior Suite at the St. Regis Abu Dhabi (AMEX FHR reservation) and a Premier Room at the Waldorf Astoria DIFC (Hilton for Luxury). Was happy enough with both upgrades as I was traveling solo.
For me, It's definitely Radisson Rewards (international).
Received some of the best upgrades there, including Presidents Suite, 3-floor apartments and more for very cheap rates.
I prefer Accor ALL as they have really easy guidelines for earning suite upgrades. Same goes for spending them.
Um, no. As an RA, booking a mid-teir (ie, fake, extra $$ room category) guarantees a 2-category upgrade (including to a suite) on EVERY stay. No other program even comes close on this benefit. Basically, if you pay an IC for a base room + $50 to $150 more per night, you will always receive a suite.
I'm getting a lot fewer complimentary suite upgrades at Hyatts even in Asia than I used to. I can't even find a decent opportunity to use SUA. Forget about maximizing a SUA on a 7 night stay, it ain't happening. The problem is that many properties are playing games with what a base level suite is, designating only a few rooms. There is almost never availability at my regular properties beyond maybe a 1 or 2 night stay if you're lucky.
I think it depends on the purpose of your trip and the perks that you value. Furthermore, a lot of it depends on the staff at the reception.
