Review: TAP Air Portugal Business Class Airbus A330-900neo (MIA-LIS)
For the first segment of our trip to Geneva, we flew TAP Air Portugal’s Airbus A330-900neo business class on the 7hr45min overnight flight from Miami (MIA) to Lisbon (LIS). TAP Air Portugal has done a phenomenal job modernizing its long haul fleet in recent years, and this was my first time flying the carrier’s flagship…

I liked the onboard experience too (flew with them three times).
My issue with TAP is the absolutely zero customer service when you try to contact them. Last year I had a ticketing issue with their TAP-issued ticket. Calling them took me nowhere. Writing to them including all the persons I found on Elliott.org led to no reply at all. Submitting an enquiry through their website showed pending a year later. Compared to their customer service, Avianca's customer service is amazing.
Thanks for this review.
I personally hated the TP J seats. Similar to AF claustrophobic ones on 77W 14J seats COI. A definitely too dense cabin/layout/Lopa.
Which cold cuts does TP serve btw? Turkey, beef, chicken pork...?
This review is very much in line with my own experience on several flights with TP in their new A330-900neo J class. I don't understand why you had concerns about food, which is generally very good (like on all southern european airlines).
I am a huge fan of TAP. It checks all the boxes of any competitive long-haul business class for usually half the cost. I flew from Boston to Funchal roundtrip in buiness class last year for 1500 dollars. I really could not care less that they did not greet me by name or wiped my @$$ for me lol. Lie flat, check! Lounge, check! Good food (way better than what Polaris serves these days for fraction of the cost), check! Amenity kit, check! Lisbon is easy to connect in too.
I have taken TAP from Toronto on many occasions and it's mainly 321s with lay flat business class.
It's perfect for a 7 hr flight super cheap business class that checks all the boxes for a short flight.
I hope more airlines would offer such competitive pricing for these shorter flights ❤️
Also for most Canadians, it's obviously better than Air Canada
That breakfast is by no means „perfectly sufficient“, this absolutely fabulous! Whenever I even smell eggs being warmed after waking up on a flight that didn’t allow me to catch more than three hours of sleep, I instantly feel sick. How can people eat this much within a few hours. Fresh fruit is generally everything I can then order…but seeing cold cuts there gave me a huge smile. Far too few airlines offer cold options for breakfast in Business, so TAP gets a star more from me only for that offering.
I agree, especially on an a red eye flight <9 hours. Who wants another massive meal? Love TAP's offering. United Polaris from Newark recently offered me the option of either a full english breakfast (which was disgusting) or waffles (ugh bloat).
Dinner food actually looked great, and I love the dessert trilogy concept! Breakfast looks poor though, also get the impression if you have dietary needs you will really need to order special meal especially with the single choice for breakfast.
We’ve been able to find RT to Europe for less than $1800 multiple trips. I agree they aren’t in the top tier but for prices like that we find them a very good value.
Thank you for another great review! I appreciate so much your format and level of detail. You've helped me make a few flight decisions as a reference.
The dessert trilogy is great. I wish more had this concept. I'd often like some cheese and then a little bit of something sweet and often it's one or the other.
I know it's a bit to do with their branding/color palette, but I like the almost neon interior of the seat storage compartments. Great contrast to make sure you've retrieved anything put in there (especially lower compartment where it's likely dark and if a black/brown interior then easy to miss smaller items).
Yeah, last thing I want first thing in the morning is a ton of sugar. I either am going to have sugar or caffeine and I'd rather take the coffee option.
But they have everything on their business class check list as top tier. Just not as good, but to your point, for 1800 roundtrip, who cares!
TAP is officially the WORST airline I've ever flown on. From service, to food quality and availability. Will avoid them at all costs. I've only flown them Premium Economy but I've had better service, food and options in economy on other airlines. I've read bad about LATAM also but flew them business class Sao Paolo - Lisbon and was incredibly impressed with the food, service and seat.
We just flew TAP from Lisbon to Chicago in business class as well and it was first rate all the way. TAP is trying hard to be a new gateway to Europe to compete with London Frankfurt Paris and Amsterdam. Their Business Class pricing beats American and United Premium Economy
How about more reviews from the last few rows of seats at the back of a plane? That's where service, seat space, food, working entertainment, etc show how good or poor an airline really is.
I've flown Aer Lingus very happily many times. My last flight was awful with almost none of the entertainment screens working in the entire section of 50 seats and run out of food choices on an 8 hr flight.
I noticed the wording ‘if you’re travelling with someone you like’ which seems to be different from previous reviews which don’t emphasize on the part of liking your compagnion 😉
However it made me wonder.. when travelling with Ford, why don’t you book middle seats to enjoy the flight together? Does the preference of a window seat top sitting next to each other?
I've now flown TAP several times, both trans-Atlantic as well as within Europe-- all business class. I was EXTREMELY PLEASED! No, they are not Emirates nor Air France, however, they beat United/American/Delta as far as quality. On a 1-10 scale, for both my intra-Europe as well as Transatlantic flights, I give them a good solid 9. They've really improved their business product substantially. I recently flew one of the US carriers overseas, I'll refrain from mentioning which one, but it was a 4 at best. Crew attitude, dreadful food, etc--- TAP beats them by a landslide!
Despite a not-so-good experience with TAP Portugal last year on their regional product, this is high on the list of products I want to try.
Also re: "it's a lot of fish." It's cod on a Portuguese airline. If anything that may have been the best choice considering it's like the national dish of Portugal.
I just flew LIS-SFO and share your sentiments exactly: Tasty food, friendly service, decent but tight bed, and actually a pretty excellent entertainment and wifi system!
But I'm not keen to fly them again, and I would caution folks on the longer daytime flights. My flight was daytime, and clocked in at 12 hours. They immediately served a meal upon departure on one tray, and they served the "breakfast snack" about an hour before landing. Right after the first meal service, the flight attendants came around to every seat and made us shut the window shades, and then they turned out all the lights and disappeared.
I didn't see a single flight attendant for about 10 hours. They didn't come through the cabin at all, and there were no further drink or food offerings.
So while I think a 7-8 hour overnight flight would be perfect for this pattern, a 12 hour daytime flight wasn't great. Hopefully they will adjust their services - I won't be looking to fly that route again!
Are you sure that you have flown TAP in premium economy? I don't think they offer that class of service.
Interesting that you did not comment that their seats were outdated with no doors. I think I would have liked the fact that there were no eggs served for breakfast on the plane.
Err not sure who you flew with but...
TAP doesn't have a premium economy class!
You got a gate! 3 out of my four flights had remote stands. TAP isn't too bad but LIS is worth avoiding IMO
I think that got better - both over the phone and writing. At least that is my experience.
We flew this exact route recently and found the seats too tight to stretch out with the tiny foot wells and banging our legs into the seat shell in front of us. We chose this flight last minute so had to sit in the very exposed aisle seats in the center of business class. The service was quite good but the food was not. We had the beef, which we had to saw through with the knife but could not chew. The price was a bargain compared to United (Fort Lauderdale through Newark to LIS)...so as usual, tradeoffs.
I’m about to do this leg next weekend . Looking at a 3.5mm Bluetooth jack for my earbuds . From the photos it’s just a one pin , correct ?
