On another note, can you usually deplane on those continuing flights? Or do you have to stay onboard? I will be flying UA803 soon from Washington to Tokyo to Singapore and am hoping I can deplane for the two hour layover in Tokyo. I don't really want to stay on the same plane 24 hours straight...!
A sari as wrapped around the waist and the shoulder always bared the midriff. Surprise you haven't seen it in all your travels. I believe Air India too uses the sari as a uniform.
Wow that's so rude they were laughing at you... you should write a complaint.
And regarding the seatmate… I think if you had raised your voice he would have left you alone. Not impolite but just very firm and factual. That worked for me in Sri Lanka.

I enjoyed reading this. It reminded me of the old trip reports and didn't at all sound douchey: no self-inflated ego or boastful imagination of having business knowledge of airlines. Just factual and first person pov reporting of the flight. Kudos.

I've always found Ben's analysis of the airline industry to be quite good.
@ Sco -- Hardly making fun of them. Just noting they're local to Sri Lanka, and that they're an acquired taste of sorts. But I'd certainly never laugh at them.
@ Tar_00 -- I have seen it, hence my comment about it being local to the place.
@ Marc -- Nope, on most airlines in a vast majority of cases you have to deplane. But on SriLankan on this route you can stay aboard. On United you definitely have to deplane at Narita.
So let me get this straight...you flew a Sri Lankan airline and the crew wore Sri Lankan attire?

Why didn't you put the seat divider up and stare at him while it went up? Or was it up the whole time?
Perhaps breaking into a rendition of "Second hand Rose", would have kept the tailor quiet. Are you sure it was his finger poking your shoulder while you closed your eyes? Seems like the two of you were having a moment there for a while. The surefire way to end any sales pitch is stating you are unemployed and living with your mother. 😉

@ Lucky @ All, Yup, the Saree is the national dress and unlikely to change, its pretty much the same colour scheme for the past 20 to 30 years (similar to what was worn when the airline was called "Airlanka" but its actually looked upon with pride and affection in the country. It is however an aquired taste
