The motivation behind these new routes is at least partly connected to the world cup- Egypt qualified. As for viability, I believe the number of Egyptians in and around both cities may sustain the routes. The IAD-CAI route is almost always full in my experience, and it seems like it's mostly folks terminating in CAI, not connecting traffic
When will the flights go on sale? They’re still not bookable, even for post May dates.
Cairo airport is the only airport where I was offered to skip the security screening in return for a small donation. That, and the authority’s tendency to reject air crash investigation outcomes. So no thank you.
Worth noting that the Los Angeles Basin (LA+Ventura+Orange+Riverside+San Bernardino counties) is the 2nd largest population of Egyptian immigrants and first-generation offspring, in the Americas. After NYC and ahead of DC.
Not to say that that's sufficient to sustain the route nonstop, but combined with a partner hub, it may suffice.
Hajj begins the evening of May 24 this year. Not a coincidence. Easy connections to Jeddah. Then year-round pilgrimages might be enough to fill a plane three times a week.
Where does EgyptAir do its 777 maintenance? Maybe at United's base at LAX? Routes are not always determined by passengers and cargo.

We are in Michigan and we’re going to fly out of Toronto but this could be a very exciting option.
I only used them for domestics flights in Egypt & my only complaint was no alcohol. My experience based on 2 short flights.

it only makes sense. over half a million americans visit Egypt a year. There about 75K-100K Egyptians who live in the West Coast. This makes total sense to run. I see it as being second to the 777 NYC Trip I've been on multiple times.
Not at all. Folks performing their Hajj would rather take the already existing Saudia direct flights to Jeddah or worst case scenario fly via Emirates. Saudia can and would easily expand frequency to daily and more.
Egyptair uses maintenance bases in Europe for all of their aircraft.
The only viable explaination is that Egypt has just signed to carry DHS pax via CAI
