Oftenbuying points strategically can be a good value, especially for luxury travel experiences where you can get the most outsized value. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club doesnt sell points often, but when the program does, its typically a pretty good deal. The latest such promotion has just been launched, and could be worth considering, as its in line with the best offers we typically see from the program.

"All Nippon Airways’ new first & business class are amazing products as well. The major catch is that availability can be really tough to come by."

That's not a trivial issue. It would be a shame to drop a large amount of money on VS points only to have to sit on them indefinitely until ANA award space opens, and ANA would be the the best (only?) value for many.

The issue for me is the 100 dollar cancellation fee or if any changes are needed. That adds up quickly if your plans aren’t written in stone.Plus when there are schedule changes you have to fight with them and escalate as they argue with you.
In one booking they changed my departure city from New York jfk to Newark without even mentioning it.They told me to pound sand or cancel so I canceled and rebooked with another program
