Although AA used to use SJC a hub (around 2001) and had flights to Paris, Taipei and Tokyo. Today, of course, Southwest is the biggest carrier there.
Both air China and China eastern operate PVG-FRA. Also PVG-CDG. That policy only applies to US-CHINA routes.
@Lucky SJC only has two gates securely connected to the customs area! How will they fit another flight in the morning?
@Oscar. Gates 17 and 18 are flexible use swing gates which means they really have 4 available gates with access to customs. Now the only new "problem" may be a crowded lounge?
@Potreroflyr Yeah. Many people still can't believe or forgot that AA's SJC-NRT non-stop lasted for 15 years. The CDG and TPE, not as long.
hey lucky. do you think Hainan should have have chosen to fly PEK or PVG into Ontario instead of Changsa - LAX? Tons of Chinese Americans live in East LA / SGV.
Seems to me, Hainan Airlines being a smaller dynamic airline with lots of growth potential;, out-maneuvered Air China to get the PEK-SJC route and so they trumped China Eastern, which was likely too focused on digesting their merger with Shanghai Airlines to focus on this route properly, and acted quickly to get this route. Shanghai is a secondary hub for Air China so it is likely even more connections will become available in Shanghai soon.
