One of the things that’s nice about Sydney is how easy (and cheap) it is to get from the airport to the city by train. That makes staying at an airport hotel during a layover reasonably convenient, or for that matter staying in a hotel in the city during a long layover.

Lucky, you said, "One of the things that’s nice about Sydney is how easy (and cheap) it is to get from the airport to the city by train."

Seriously? I was shocked at how expensive it was to go from the airport to the city, considering it's a "normal" train/subway system. It annoyed me that they tacked on the additional $10AUD charge (or whatever it was) just because I was coming from the airport.

@ DiscoPapa -- Hmm, maybe my memory is off. I boarded one station beyond the airport, because that's where my hotel was, and I think I paid something like $4AUD total roundtrip.

Ahh, makes sense. Yeah, they stick you with a pretty large fee for boarding at the airport. Once you got into town, it was cheap.

The cheap train ride would be because you got on at Mascot, the next stop along from the Airport. Don't suggest doing this if you arrive off a flight but if you're at an airport hotel and happy to walk then yes, it'll save you about $10 each way.

My morning coffee and muffin was ~USD$ 8.00

The train ride is expensive.

Starbucks is a joke brand to Australians.

I too was shocked that you thought the ticket was cheap. I paid 15 AUD each way to my hotel near Central, which is the most expensive public transport to/from the airport I've paid since the HEX, which is a premium product with much cheaper public transport alternatives.

Think Starbucks in Australia is expensive? Try Switzerland. I think I paid 8CHF for a frap.

Lovely to see the Circular Quay pictures 😉
We spent the last 4 days of our honeymoon in Quay Grand Suites at the beginning of April this year. Sadly it all seems so long ago, including eating in City Extra!
