Don't the gate agents get bonus for an on-time departure? By gate checking more bags, they would spend less time looking for overhead space and rearranging bags.

Lucky,
The demeanor of premium cabin flight crews on American carriers is what plagues the service mentality in this troubled industry. Gone is the pride of the sky which is still radiant amongst foreign flag carriers. Surely “know what you’re gonna have?” isn't in their training or in the handbook. I wrote a thesis in grad school about the "customers perception of value" and nothing "ding's" truer. When you're in a premium cabin, you should be addressed in a premium manner. PROPERLY: by last name and without the use of slang. It is up to you, as the customer, to break the ice of formalities. It only takes one bent wing on a FA's lapel to leave a the taste of stale nuts in a passengers mouth.

@Justin - not to mention American FAs can be so dusty!

Delta is very Elite minded. Gold or higher and it is almost always "Thank you, Mr/Ms. " etc. Flight crews can see Elite status on flight manifests and sometimes go out of their way to personally thank you for your business.

Service in generally varies so much in the US. I eat out often at a variety of restaurants (fast food to very high end) and sometimes you wonder if the servers realize they make their money off tips. I'm in my 40s and I don't understand how anyone working thinks I want to be addressed as "Dude", "Boss", etc. Either say "Hello. How can I help you sir?" or leave out the sir part but don't say "Hi Boss" or "What can I get you dude?".

It is always nice when the FA knows your name. I'd say that happens a minority of the time when I'm flying. I was out recently and the lady asked me if I preferred Richard or Rick. I guess the thought that I might prefer "Mr. X" never occurred to her.

Hope you enjoyed your time in Germany. I was there Dec 2-14 visiting Munich, Salzburg, Rothenburg, Nurnberg, Wurzberg and Heidelburg. I miss the food and the markets already.

Happy New Year.
Rich

A great report as usual lucky. What seat number and row did you select on this flight as it appears you have more space than some of the other seats? Have you flown the new DL C?

Interesting story about those 767 seats.... last summer, I flew with my mother to Europe, which was her first time in the BusinessElite seats. She's not much of an airplane sleeper, but she was trying. In the middle of the night, I'm out like a light... then all of the sudden, my seat starts going up, then down, then back up. I look over and my mom (without her glasses on) is trying to adjust her seat, but as you can see in Lucky's picture, the controls for both seats are right next to her. She didn't realize she was pushing my seat buttons!

A quick lift of her hand over to her controls solved the issue. 🙂

Wow,
I've never heard “know what you’re gonna have?” on United. I'm always addressed by my last name, always given time to think about the selections and the FAs often will comment on the availability or quality of a particular meal offering on any given trip.
While it sounds like Premium service of some stripe, it doesn't exactly make me want to run off and go join SkyTeam.
