This looks like a business class seat from way back. Well, maybe from a medium-back, or like regular economy from really way back (sans tech) when fares were regulated and economy cost about the same as premium economy or business now, adjusted for inflation.
Thanks for unlocking the memory. December 2001 or 2002, UA upgraded me from Y to J on their LAX-AKL 747. J was 2-4-2 (Y was 3-4-3) and you all watched the same movie on the shared screen.

Love this site so much, and the flight reviews most of all. I’d like it even more if you started doing premium economy reviews. I have a sense that some airlines are beginning to distinguish themselves with an improved PE product. And for a daytime flight from Europe to the U.S. I’d jump on a good PE seat for the right price. All to say, c’mon Ben, we need your voice on this topic!
I’ve stopped splashing out for J on daytime flights. PE is comfortable, the food is good, and I don’t need to sleep. Overnights I still insist on J. But this new PE seat looks like it might allow me to sleep. If other carriers adopt it I would certainly give it a try.

Does no one question why EVERYTHING seems to have this same pattern. 90%+ plane seats, car seats, rugs - just on everything! Go look...its rarely anything else, and if the plane seat does not have it, its the interior walls of the plane, bulkhead, or carpet.
Hotel room carpets, walls, furniture items etc.
Look in your home, I assure you, its everywhere!!!

It is because it provides better support for the material inside and structure. It probably also makes the furniture last longer and take more of a beating.

There are, of course, but making diamonds only requires straight stitches. That means a quicker and less expensive construction process than, say, a pattern involving circles.

I'm fascinated that Emirates still resists introducing anything even remotely resembling contemporary design. I understand that eastern European mafia chic was kinda part of their overall design manual / expression but the world has moved on - even among people with zero taste. This kind of design has been out of date for at least two decades.
Going to give their J seats a run for their money. Only good thing about J on EKs 777 is being woken up with an Espresso Martini.
