Delighted to hear they have pick-up rights between GRU and SCL. I sometimes feel there's a bit of price fixing between the current airlines on the route.
Is there a 5th freedom right in place?
Routes online reported yesterday:
“The airline currently does not have local traffic rights on Sao Paulo Guarulhos – Santiago de Chile sector.”
It’d be great if they did: their Rio-Buenos Aires flight is a God-send for a weird trip I’m doing in a few weeks.
Worth mentioning that LATAM will soon fly a similar route:
SCL-GRU-TLV with similar frequency.
Business Class will be 2-2-2 like Ft Lauderdale. Wonder if they will update to the new seat. Sounds like they are keeping the current seat.
I wish they flew GIG-SCL as I much prefer GIG to GRU. Ah well. Nonetheless, I always think competition is good for the airline industry from a customer point of view.

Yes Malc. From what I understand Emirates is not placing the new business class into existing aircraft, they are only being fitted with new deliveries.
I can see logic between behind this route.
Both Chile and Brazil have a strong economic tie with China and Japan. However there aren’t many choices for these routes. You would need either transit through Europe (not ideal because of infamous baggage handling like Paris airport) , US (not ideal because of visa requirements) , Mexico and Canada (not really ideal because of limit amount of flights)
So Middle East is one ideal transit location for East Asia / Latin America traffic

There’s also the option of transiting through New Zealand (EZE-AKL). Avoids the nightmare lottery of US immigration (I *always* avoid US transits if at all possible).
I’m using that route for a trip to Tokyo next month, with a 3 hour layover in Auckland. Similarly (if a bit more out of the way), SCL-SYD on, eg, Qantas.
