Boeing will win some lost ground in the region, if the 737Max deal goes through. In India, there are over 650 orders for A320Neo, compared to less than 70 for 737Max..
At the same time, there are only 6 Airbus widebodies in India (6 A330 with Jet Airways)
I am wondering about the real intentions here. My sources tell me that 787 has been a pain for QR, so there must be some sort of agreement on upgrades. Also, if you read their news release, BOEING makes an active statement about employment in the US, so I am wondering if there was some political push behind this huge order.

Exactly. It's what Duke787 said. Qatar waited to place the commercial order with Boeing until the US approved the F-15 sale. The order would not be of this magnitude had it not been for the F-16s
@Ken I don't understand how the 787 could be a pain to Qatar.. Would you mind elaborating on that? Is it because they're too small, or..?
Supposedly the 737 MAX are not for QR themselves, but rather for some subsidiary to operate. Still odd that they wouldn't stick with one type, either A320neo or 737 MAX.
I think the Scattered Fleet Award belongs solidly to Delta. I can't even imagine the logistics of managing & maintaining such a mixture of aircraft & crews. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that they have their own MRO (TechOps), but that doesn't take away the operational challenges.
If anything, I've admired the airlines which have managed to keep a small variety of aircraft. Southwest & JetBlue come to mind. They can swap any of their aircraft without having to swap crews. This has to save a fortune when IRROPs happen and in training as well.

Qatar Airways always comes across more as an Ali Baker plaything than a serious airline. You compare this to Emirates which effectively operates two types 777-300 & A380 .
As mentioned, its linked to the F15 deal which had been stalled by lawmakers for more than two years. So looks like an additional purchase from Boeing will help speed this up!

I was recently on a flight on a Qatar B777 from Doha to Cairo which featured the same business class seats as the Qatar A320. I took pictures and will be happy to share.

A319, A320, A321, A332, A333, A340, A350-900, A350-1000, A380, B737, B777-200LR, Boeing 777-300ER, B777-8, B777-9, B788 and B789.
That is such a scattered and confused fleet. I hope they have a plan with the 737s and are not ordering just to spite Airbus.

Why do you call the Qatar 777-300 Business Class Hard product 'outdated'? It's a perfectly flat seat in a really comfortable 2-2-2 configuration. No middle seats in Business Class are not 'outdated', but amazing.
