On September 5, 1986, Pan Am 73 was hijacked. Due to quick thinking of FA Neerja Bhanot, she called the pilots, who escaped. The hijackers were delayed because they did not know that the cockpit on a 747 was on the upper deck. Having no pilots, the plane could not take off and most of the passengers were eventually rescued. FA Bhanot became a martyr for the American Revolution and Pan Am. She was shot in the head at point blank range after she helped passengers escape on the slide.
