I've been getting these offers for about 6 months or so...and I'm not even near the $25k threshold. I just figured it was Delta's way of telling me I need a vacation, lol! 🙂
yea you seem to be absolutely right the number of miles is based on your spend. I barely use this card but can get 5k miles on advance. The only time I can see doing this is if there is an amazing award sale and I need to top off my account real fast to snag the award. Otherwise I don't want to be locked in to spending with amex or having to pay a penalty.
I really do not see the big deal unless I am missing something: The Amex Platinum card has had this Pfeature forever, with, unless I am mistaken, an unlimited number of miles to borrow. I used it once years ago. I seem to remember that the "refund" period was one year (not sure, though).
@ Pierre -- That program was never quite unlimited, but rather based on which card you had (Plat holders could borrow more than Golds, etc.). It was unforunately discontinued in 2013, though you can still purchase points as part of a transfer for 2.5¢ each.

I've requested Skymiles before through this offer, when I needed to book a ticket and didn't have time to wait for my statement to close. One thing to note is that if you request miles, you can't then increase the amount you've requested or request more until you 'earn' the initial miles you've requested. So be sure you request the amount you need- don't lowball it! I made that mistake, but was able to secure message Amex, and they gave me an "emergency mileage advance" - still not quite sure what that was, but I'll take it!
