“There aren’t any other no annual fee Amex cards that are open to new cardmembers that get you enrolled in the “full” Membership Rewards program.” — This is not true. There’s the Amex Everyday Card.
The Amex Everyday Card is not open to new applications. The Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card is. But, it is cash back only and there is not a MR-points-earning version. Ben expressly refers to enrollment in the MR program.
I wouldn't be surprised if Amex shelves the BBP and left just the BBC and Graphite. I sense that's the direction it's headed.
I upgraded my Am Ex gold to Platinum for a great upgrade offer. At the time, I didn't want to apply outright for another card. I had plans to downgrade back to gold after a year for the 4x dining and groceries. I love my platinum card so much that I am keeping it. I decided to get the blue business plus so I can earn 2x on everything, Hopefully that balances out the 4x grcoeries and dining I am now missing. My husband and I don't really spend that much in either of thesse categories anyway since it is just the 2 of us and don't eat out much anymore either. So the blue business plus is a keeper for me. Just wish I could have gotten a better welcome offer.
