Been there as well twice, once at Nursultan (Astana) in 2017, then at Almaty in 2019. Very kind people and very amazing landscape, esp around Almaty. Next time I will again fly to Almaty and try to make a step over at Tashkent, which offers visa free entry for Germans now.

I think all of this could have been avoided if he had made the decision long ago to make Borat's "home country" a made up "old world" country. Still has the same message and impact, but can't be seen as picking on anyone in particular.

P.S. Although I've found the Borat films to be funny, it's not illogical to think that some Kazakhs may take offense in the movie.

@Roy know better about what? He did nothing wrong, immoral, or illegal. Borat ran in because if they filmed him naked with a secret camera and a reasonable expectation of privacy it would have been a FELONY!
