The Best Valentine's Day Surprise I've Ever Pulled Off
First, let me say that I'm not the biggest fan of Valentine's Day or other Hallmark holidays, but there are a few times in your life when it can be worthwhile to go with the flow. And for me, that was ten years ago when I managed to pull off the biggest Valentine's Day surprise…

Awwwwwe, the lengths guys go to, to put women on pedestals.
I think there should be a day in the year when women go all out to win the affections of the guys, in this "era of equality" *snort*
Credit, one question, how do you always manage to be so close to the top comments. I wanna learn from you mein führer.
"I was flying to Denver in February so of course I was bringing my skis. And bags have to fly with the passenger. You absolutely cannot under any circumstances voluntarily separate yourself from your bags. Period."
This is true internationally but not true domestically. Unless rules have changed...
Travis, it's a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing it. Life is all about creating memories, and this one sure qualifies as a winner.
I love reminiscing!
Back in the 1980s, my job had me flying back & forth between Boston and Glasgow on good old Northwest...usually in a domestically configured DC10 (ug). Anyway, I had racked up a lot of Worldperks miles. At one point I was dating a silly but really sexy (and typically impoverished) BU student and decided to surprise him with a special Valentines day dinner. I told him to pack a bag and bring his passport as we were heading to a little Canadian B&B for the weekend.
Well...
The week before (when I had gotten the idea) I had gone to the NW ticket office in Boston and cashed in 100,000 miles for two first class R/T tickets to Bangkok via JFK & NRT. I had also booked a room in the garden wing at Bangkok's gorgeous Oriental Hotel.
I was so excited to spring my surprise on John! Early on that Friday morning I picked him up at his apartment and told him that we were flying to Canada and not driving. So we got to Logan and walked up to the Northwest check-in counter. Of course, my little fib was exposed when the counter agent asked "You're flying with us all the way to Bangkok today?"
Poor little John! His look of absolute confusion was priceless! He started sputtering out all sorts of questions:
"Bangkok? We're going to Thailand? Now? Right now?"
"Yes. We're leaving right now."
"We can't just get up and head across the world!"
"Yes we can and we are."
It was fun watching his adorable mind trying to quickly comprehend it all.
"When do we come back? What about my classes?"
"We're just going for dinner. We'll fly back on Monday so you'll only be missing one day."
"Clothes! I thought we were going to Quebec! I only packed winter clothes!"
"There are stores in Bangkok."
Ahhhh...to be young and flush with miles! We had such a blast, even though we only had one full day in Bangkok. Our Valentines day dinner was on the Oriental Hotel's verandah overlooking the Chao Phraya river and an exquisite sunset. I lost contact with John twenty years ago but I still wonder if he thinks back to that dinner and smiles, much like I do every Valentines Day.
Thanks to all for tolerating this way too lengthy of a comment.
I did something very similar to surprise my wife (then GF) once. Well except I proposed to her that night 🙂
Lovely!
Had very similar story, but with 100 days of being together, which apparently is a thing in Korea, where my (now) wife is from.
The story about her meeting with her girlfriend for dinner, me calling her literally 10 minutes before we were supposed to meet to say good night etc - all details were exactly the same. 🙂
The only difference was I flew from Poland to Tokyo, where she lived at the time, around 15-16 hours. Spent 1 night in Tokyo and had to go back.
Was worth it thou, very happily married now. 🙂
