Im also just learning to love United's ability to cancel awards for free for 1ks. Im traveling this summer to Europe with a friend and hes worried about waiting for prices to go down to buy a ticket (currently all 1400+). So im booking him a Y award as a backup in case he doesnt end up finding anything reasonable with the expectation that Ill be able to cancel it. God I love being 1k 🙂
Lucky, the largest Japanese population outside of Japan is in Brazil, so it isn't surprising that JAL would fly that GRU-JFK route.
@whakojacko, I sort of figured this out. As a 1k, it's like book and hold (at will). :>)
On a *A award, you can change the return as long as you change it to UA metal... so your brother would have been fine as long as he didn't mind UA 🙂
