American AAdvantage issues systemwide upgrades through its Loyalty Point Rewards program. The idea is that systemwide upgrades can be used to confirm upgrades in advance, though only if there’s confirmable upgrade space available (otherwise the upgrade requests are added to a waitlist).

I just booked this promotion to replace an award ticket I had booked at a not-great value.
total scam...they have first added a surcharge for premium economy for August travel to drive up that price "OTHERWISE ORIGINATING THE UNITED STATES - A SURCHARGE OF USD 575.00 PER FARE COMPONENT WILL BE ADDED TO THE APPLICABLE FARE FOR TRANSATLANTIC SECTORS." This surcharge does not show for premium eco fares before/after August travel...sneaky greedy airline
Conveniently, their flights to London in August in Premium Economy are more expensive than joint venture partner British Airways even when booking through American’s site on the same itinerary… lol.

Stupid people still book premium economy.
So many stupid people flying that they seem to fill up this cabin on every flight.
With these upgrades, they can scam even more people into overpaying.
This is the worst value cabin for passengers, you either pay for business or don't.
CLASSIC. Knew this was likely ‘too good to be true.’ SWU still about as worthless as PlusPoints. GUCs and Move to Mint still confirmed in-advance for the most part. High-value RUCs lacking these days (JFK-SFO, etc.)
2-4 years ago TATL PE was a steal. I regularly would fly for <$1000 RT.
Today, if you look at AA PE pricing, in many cases the price difference between PE & J is minimal. So, essentially, AA is selling J for a small discount if you have a SWU.
It's great if you already had PE booked for August for those destinations or could book by EOD tomorrow but that's not most people that have a SWU they want to use on a worthwhile flight.
I'd buy PE for a day time flight on something like LHR/CDG/AMS to East Coast, particularly if I could get the bulkhead with very ample legroom and ability to get out without interrupting your seatmate. But for a 10+hour or overnight flight, no.
Often a very good value on points though. If you can fly DCA-MIA-SCL for 22k in Y, 38k in PE, or 140k for J I think PE can be a sweet spot
I am EP and fly 500k miles a year with American. Routes that offer SWU have been so limited that all 6 of mine are set to expire March 31. I am flying internationally this summer but not during August. This could have been a really nice gesture if it was targeted to those of us who haven’t been able to use our SWUs so far due to less availability (than I’ve ever seen in previous years). Instead it feels like a giant F you to all of us. I’m not choosing any more SWUs as rewards only miles- they are worthless as far as I am concerned.

This is great! I have two expiring SWUs and PE flights that have already been booked for August. I split off the husband and kid and now I'm just waiting the 2-3 hours for them to clear into J.
A bit of a slap in the face to those of us who actively did not choose SWUs because we know how they have decimated the value over the last few years. But feels par for the course these days.
I got excited when I got this email- until I saw it was only for August. They could also just make SWUs useful. There’s not even half decent availability on domestic flights- and not a single international trip I’ve taken this year has had availability.
That’s right, I looked at a bunch of fares in August to Europe and Australia, it’s like >3000$ for PE & >4000$ for J to Europe and >6000$ for PE to o Australia, and absurd 18000$ for J to Down Under (love to see someone who actually manages or is willing to fork out that much for an AA seat to Sydney). You wonder whether they adjusted prices for the purpose of the ‘promotion’ :-). Nothing to see with this promotion.
I booked LHR connecting in DFW both ways. Only the TATL segments were upgraded. Domestic waitlisted.
Lucky for us. We booked PHL-NCE 2 weeks ago in PE. Unfortunately the outbound is 7/30, but I can use 2 SWU on the return that would otherwise expire.
Hey using SWU are tough let’s be honest. Can they be used, absolutely. You just have to be very flexible on dates and routing, and be very diligent about looking for space and sometimes use other programs like expert flyer to find availability. This at least allows you to confirm an upgrade immediately, sure pay a little bit more, but it is what it is. In my case I paid about $300 more per seat over coach , but I did see some routings where premium economy was actually cheaper than basic economy by a few bucks.
Finally, there are those circumstances where if you had an award ticket like I did it allowed me to save the extortion fee you typically pay when flying through London so the delta didn’t seem so bad plus the mileage savings for another trip.
No wonder why every fare I looked cheapest I could get was $2,500. The pricing consistently was under $1,900 for PE. I would been a buyer and cancelled a good award ticket I had at $2K. Over that amount no thanks.
Booked a round trip from PHX to ATH, BA flight on the outbound AA flight on the return. Found out quickly that it has to be on AA metal. Called switched me to AA metal and the upgrade cleared right away.
