This year has been radical on the airline alliance front. Many international airlines are losing heaps of money on their longhaul routes, which were primarily where they made all their money previously. The fact is with increasing competition in key markets, a weak economy, and oil prices still where they are, it's tough to make…

Who wants to hook up with a US Based Carrier? Not like its a good time to get in with one of them.

"Slut of the skies"... they just like to try different partners and see what fits that day of the week....

before finding another partner to share in its microbrewary beer 😉

Alliances aside ANZ have a ton of competition on the eastbound London-NZ route and none other than Quantas westbound since no US carriers go there. It's surely more profitable for them to run planes from CA to NZ where fares are always high.

I just don't get why they wouldn't tie up with CA if they wanted China access or NH for Auckland-Tokyo-London. Plenty of *A options in the area, no need to jump to cathay.

Told you two weeks ago some old time Qantas rivals would tee up. If you are in NZ the quickest way to LHR is via USA there wasn't much traffic to HK.

@Ciaran Westbound out of NZ is the most competition to Europe, but longer for flights. East bound out of NZ to the States their is only ANZ, Qantas pulled out of this route some time ago, UA may do DFW-AKL but they ain't in no rush any NZlander will till you there fares are high to anywhere. Because NZ is a low currency the traffic tends to be inbound rather than out.

Its SQ that we await with breadth bet my money is still on Virgin Global-SQ-Silk-Scoot!! All in the family new alliances are based on point to point travel rather than hubs and they partner with airlines of a similar standard.

Was unfortunate to end up on the Air NZ code share 777 flight. Extremely cramped due to having an extra row of seats compared to Cathay Pacific 777. I had to sit twisted sideways for 11 hours to have my shoulder in from of my wifes shoulder, and on the isle end everyone walking past bumped into my other shoulder.
