There are three main types of points you can earn with travel rewards credit cards. Program-specific points are linked to a particular airline or hotel brand — these can give you great perks when you’re flying that airline or staying at that hotel, but don’t always earn the most rewards otherwise. Fixed-value points are awesome if you have limited flexibility — these are worth a set amount (often ~1¢ per point), so can usually be used to pay for nearly any travel expense, so you can get any seat on any flight, a room at a boutique hotel, or even use them towards trains and cruises.

Our absolute favorite kind of points however, are earned with the super-flexible transferable rewards credit cards. These really offer the best of both worlds, allowing you to decide when you’re ready to redeem your points whether you want to use them at a fixed-value rate, or transfer them to a loyalty program.

Any kind of travel card is going to be helpful when it comes time to plan your next trip, no matter whether you’re planning a dream vacation or a family trip, but if you have the option we definitely recommend picking a flexible points rewards cards:

Best Flexible Rewards Credit Card Offers (November 2019)

When we talk about flexible rewards cards, there are five major “currencies” to consider, each of which can be useful in their own way:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards are the easiest to earn, given the great portfolio of Chase credit cards and their generous earnings rates
  • American Express Membership Rewards is the original transferable points program offered by certain American Express credit cards, and has unique transfer partners
  • Capital One introduced a mileage transfer option recently for key Capital One credit cards, so you can earn up to 1.5 airline miles for every dollar you spend on both their personal and business miles cards
  • Citi ThankYou lets you pool points between both your cards, and those of others earning ThankYou points on Citi credit cards, though they don’t have many cards to choose from
  • Marriott Bonvoy points can be transferred to over 30 airlines, which is a pathway to get points in more obscure airline programs when needed, and can be earned with a variety of Marriott credit cards
  • Brex rewards allow startups (especially tech companies) to earn rewards on a corporate card and then transfer those points to airlines

With all those options it can certainly get overwhelming. Be sure to check out the list of transfer partners for each flexible points program, then think about which credit cards will earn the most points for the purchases you normally make. We’d also recommend focusing on one currency to start with, so that you can learn how to maximize the program, and don’t find yourself with your points too spread out when it’s time to redeem your miles. Here are the best flexible rewards credit card offers available today:

The Benefits of Credit Cards with Transferable Points

Fundamentally, the biggest benefit of having transferable or flexible points is that you don’t have to decide right away how (or where) you’re going to use the points you earn. There are some awesome perks to transferable points that you won’t want to miss out on:

  1. Pay for nearly any travel expense – Having a flexible points card means you don’t have to decide in advance how you’re going to use your points. If you see a great deal on paid airfare or a bargain on a cruise, you can use your points towards those purchases! Depending on the bank you can use your points through their portal, over the phone, or directly with all kinds of travel providers.
  2. Transfer points to a loyalty partner – Rather than accumulating all your points with a single airline (which could change their program or devalue their awards before you have a chance to use your miles), a flexible rewards program allows you to move points to travel partners when you’re ready to book your trip. Transfer times are usually very quick
  3. Minimize risk – Think of earning transferable points like investing in a broad-market mutual fund versus picking single stocks. With flexible points you have the option to move points to a variety of hotels and airlines, so if one doesn’t have award availability, or makes negative changes to their program, you can transfer your points to another one, rather than getting stuck with points you can’t use.
  4. Combine your points — All the major flexible points programs allow you to pool points across multiple cards. Some even let you combine your points with someone else! So regardless of whether you earn points with a personal or business credit card, you can pool them together prior to making any redemptions.

We always encourage OMAAT readers to earn points with a flexible points program whenever possible. Yes, there are tons of great niche cards that grant you airport lounge access, or earn a big welcome bonus, and those should absolutely have a place in your wallet. But the majority of your long-term spend should be directed towards cards that allow you to choose how you want to use your miles when the time is right.
