The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is a really exceptional hotel credit card. Not only is it the lowest annual fee hotel credit card which offers an annual free night certificate, but it’s also the only hotel credit card which offers a free annual night certificate without a cap on the category of hotel you can redeem at. Other hotel credit cards (with higher annual fees) have a cap on which type of hotels you can use your free night certificates for. If you stay at IHG hotels quite often, you will earn 10 points per $1 spent when you stay at IHG hotels.
With that in mind, I figured I’d share five reasons you should apply for the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, which has an annual fee of just $49 (waived for the first year):
The welcome bonus is great
The IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card is offering a welcome bonus where you can earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
Get a night at any IHG hotel in the world for just $89 per year
This card arguably offers the most valuable annual free night certificate perk of any credit card. The card has an annual fee of just $89 per year, and for that you get a free night certificate you can use at any IHG property. This alone is a reason to pick up this card. This year I used that benefit for a free night at the InterContinental London The O2, where the paid rate would have been almost 500USD for the one night stay.
Get a 10% refund on the points you redeem
You can receive a 10% refund when you redeem your points, for a total of up to 100,000 refunded points per year (that means it’s valid for up to a million redeemed points per year).
Keep in mind that IHG often also sells points at a very reasonable cost, which can be even more worthwhile if you’re getting a 10% refund when you redeem those points. That makes redemptions at some high end properties more worthwhile.
IHG Platinum status for as long as you have the card
You receive IHG Rewards Club Platinum status for as long as you have the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. I’ll be the first to say that Platinum status isn’t that great, but it’ll often lead to a room upgrade, and you receive a 50% bonus on earned points.
For example, at the Crowne Plaza Doha I received an upgrade to a suite for being a Platinum member.
Getting approved for the card isn’t too difficult
Keep in mind that Chase has a policy on many of their cards where they won’t approve you if you’ve applied for more than five cards in the past 24 months. That policy doesn’t apply to all cards, including the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card. That means you can potentially be approved for this card even if you’ve applied for more than five cards in the past 24 months.
The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is one of the most generally useful hotel credit cards out there. If nothing else, the annual free night certificate more than justifies the $49 annual fee, as I think a vast majority of people will get outsized value there. This card has a great welcome bonus and is worth holding onto long term thanks to the ongoing perks, making this card a winner, in my book.
