Link: Check if you’re eligible for an Amazon discount with Amex
Amazon and American Express frequently offer targeted promotions that can save you money on an Amazon purchase by redeeming a single Membership Rewards point (there are similar promotions with Chase).
We see these promotions every so often, and the latest such offer has been introduced as of July 2024. I wanted to go over the details of that, as it’s an easy way to save money.
In this post:
Save on Amazon by redeeming Amex points
Thanks to a targeted promotion from American Express and Amazon, it’s possible to save on Amazon purchases by redeeming a single Membership Rewards point. This new promotion is largely even targeted at people who have been eligible for this offer in the past.
There are often several different versions of the offer, and you’ll want to check this link to see which offer your account is eligible for, if any. There are versions offering 15% off, 30% off, 40% off, and even 50% off. In each case, there’s a cap on how much you can save (in terms of the total dollar amount).
There are a few things to be aware of with this promotion:
- Check to see if you’re eligible for an offer by clicking the “Activate now” button at this link; note that to be eligible you’ll have to have a card earning Amex Membership Rewards points linked to your account, so if you don’t have that, add one
- This promotion is available through July 31, 2024, or until 10,000 people have redeemed this offer, so you’ll want to use this ASAP
- This offer is only available for products shipped by Amazon.com; products fulfilled through third parties won’t qualify, even if they’re “fulfilled by Amazon.com” or “Prime eligible”
- You can take advantage of this promotion at most one time
Step-by-step guide to using this offer
Want to take advantage of one of these promotions? There are a few simple steps. First of all, you’ll want to activate whichever offer you’re eligible for at this link. If you are eligible, you’ll see a green message stating “this promo code is now activated and your points will be applied at checkout.”
Then go through the shopping process as you usually would, keeping in mind the limitations and restrictions of the offer.
For example, my account was eligible for the 30% off promotion, so I added a $100 Uber gift card to my shopping cart.
I then proceeded to checkout, and under the “payment method” section, I selected one of my cards that earns Amex Membership Rewards points. There you’ll see an option to select how many points you want to apply toward a purchase.
The catch is that redeeming Amex points toward an Amazon purchase isn’t a good deal, as you ordinarily get just 0.7 cents of value per point, and I value Amex points at 1.7 cents each. So what you’ll want to do is to redeem as few points as possible.
For these offers, you’ll want to redeem a single point, so you should type “$0.01” in the box.
Then when you click “use this payment method,” you’ll see the discount applied.
If you don’t have an immediate need to buy something on Amazon but are eligible, I’d still recommend taking advantage of this, especially if you’re eligible for a discount of 30%. There are all kinds of gift card purchases this can be applied toward, for companies like Apple, DoorDash, Southwest Airlines, Starbucks, Uber, Uber Eats, Whole Foods, etc.
Bottom line
There’s currently a promotion for redeeming Amex points through Amazon. There are different offers, and one common offer seems to be the opportunity to save 30% on an Amazon purchase, with total savings of up to $30. This is a great deal, so check to see if you’re eligible, and if so, I’d recommend taking advantage ASAP.
Were you targeted for one of these Amex deals with Amazon, and if so, do you plan on taking advantage of them?
Thanks for posting this, got 50% off $150 item!
I never get these offers
Got a weird 40% off only if I use a minimum of 1428 MR points offer. Anyone else in that same boat? Practically useless.
I got the same offer. I assume this isn't a good deal then
I had the same message pop up and was able to use $.01 to get the 40% off. Ultimately saved $40.00, not a bad deal.
not available for EU, or?
I got Get 40% off eligible products when using a minimum of 1428 Membership Rewards points.
Maximum discount $40.
My offer was 40% off $100 but the catch for mine is I have to use a minimum of 1428 points. So considering that’s about $15 worth of points (quite a bit more when you find a good deal) it’s less of a good deal.
Same here.
Fantastic! Used 1 Amex point and got 50% off AirPods Pro 2! Still can't believe it.
I have same- $40 max off and using 1428 points. I can get more value transferring to airlines.
Same offer here.
My offer was 40% with minimum use of 1428 MR points. I think that’s not gonna be worth it, how’s your math?
For me, it's worth it. 1428 MR for $40 in value (2.8c pp). All depends on how many MR you have and if you have something in mind you could use the $40 off on.
Just put in 1 point and it will work
I could kiss you (thank you)!
I've had 50% off with 1 point once before and normally get $10 max off. This time I am getting 40% off (up to $40 max) by redeeming 1428 points.
It looks like $10 minimum (1429 Amex points) is needed to trigger this.
0.01 point doesn;t work anymore.
So with Ben's example above, it would be gaining $100 Uber card, paying 75$ on Amex card, plus spending 1429 points ($30?). And gaining 100 points (1x) on the general category on Amex.
It's loss, at this point.
@Lucky consider creating a new set of screenshots, I think yours are from the previous iterations of this promo.
I've had 50% off and only 1 point needed. Great tip!
Ben, would an offer of 40% off with a minimum of 1428 AMEX points be worthwhile? Thanks.
15% off up to $15.
My offer is 15% off. Requires using 1429 points for $10. Hard pass.
Same offer, same reaction.
I also got the 15% offer with a minimum point spend of 1428 or 1429. I was going to buy a $100 Starbucks card for $85 plus 1 point but no deal. Previous, similar, offers always accepted 1 point.
My offer gives me 40% off, but it requires me to use a minimum of 1428 points.
Same with me! (And my name is David, too!)
Another, David here. Mine offer is 50% off, only .01 needed.
Since Amazon gives you only 0.7 cents in value per MR point, and by Ben's valuation MR points are worth 1.7 cents, you are losing 1 cent for every MR point you redeem. In your case, that means 14.28, leaving you with a net gain of 25.78 if you max out the promotion.
I was only offered the 15 percent promotion, but with no minimum number of points to redeem, so I'll make 14.99 if I max out the promotion, I suppose with a gift card.
