Almost Everyone Should Receive 10,000 Free Alaska Miles!

Earlier I wrote about how Alaska seems to be awarding certain people with 10,000 free miles. When the miles were posted to accounts, the description read “SPECIAL SERVICES ELEVATE MEMBER OTO 10K BONUS.”

So it seems pretty clear that this is linked to Alaska’s takeover of Virgin America. Furthermore, the timing makes sense, given that you can now transfer your Virgin America points to Alaska Mileage Plan (though you may not want to, since as of now the transfers are one-way, as you can’t transfer from Alaska to Virgin America).

The problem with the 10,000 mile bonus is that we couldn’t actually figure out based on what criteria they were awarding the bonus.  It seemed entirely random, and obviously it left a bad taste in some peoples’ mouths when they didn’t get the bonus, and others did. While I don’t share that sentiment (even though I didn’t get the bonus), nowadays airlines should expect just about all information will be shared due to the internet.

The good news if that if you haven’t yet received this gift, it’s probably still coming. Everyone who had an Alaska Mileage Plan and Virgin America Elevate account as of December 5, 2016, should get the 10,000 mile bonus. Furthermore, Elevate members who don’t yet have a Mileage Plan account will be able to choose a welcome bonus when they activate their account, with the choice between 10,000 miles and a $100 flight credit.

Per a statement from Alaska:

We understand that many Mileage Plan members have questions about a surprise 10,000 mile gift that started appearing in some accounts last night, and we wanted to help put some of the mystery to rest. We can’t wait to show members of both programs what more to love looks like with Alaska Mileage Plan, and decided to kick things off with a 10,000 mile bonus award to thank our guests who have been loyal members of both Elevate and Mileage Plan. The gift process is expected to be completed over the course of next couple of days, and eligible members — which includes guests who were active in both Elevate and Mileage Plan as of December 5, 2016 — should look for an email from Mileage Plan later this week. Elevate members who don’t have a Mileage Plan account will be invited to activate one, along with details about their own special welcome offer, how to convert points, and status matching. For now, please sit tight, and we’ll be sharing more information about what members have to look forward to in the next couple of days.

So if you meet the criteria and haven’t yet gotten the bonus, just be patient, as the bonus should post in the next few days!

(Tip of the hat to The Points Guy)

  1. How do they know if we are members for both? Do we have to link the accounts first to get the bonus?

  2. I tweeted Alaska about the special bonus. They responded saying that I should receive an email within a few days. This afternoon, I saw 10K posted in my acct.

  3. I’m not sure how they’re doing the matching (email address? physical address?) because there was never any specific linking, but my 10K showed up today. They’re, like, actually trying to use their loyalty program to win loyalty! So strange.

  4. What explains the 4 MVP Gold Guest Upgrades and 2-4 Board Room passes? What’s the rationale for who got those and 2 vs 4 lounge passes?

  5. I got my 10K in that the last hour or two. I have never flown Virgin America, but I had 500 points (signup bonus or something). I transferred those earlier today. It just goes to show you that you should pick up those odd points in programs you may not really use much. You never know.

I sort of didn’t want to start thinking it was coming, and risk being disappointed.

  6. I agree with Carl P. I only opened an Elevate account because of those e-mail signup bonuses a couple months ago (thanks, OMAAT!), never really expecting to have a use for the points. But I just checked my Alaska account (again, thanks OMAAT, because I never would have looked at the account because I only have a couple hundred miles left). Of course it’s a double-edged sword because now I’m going to have to worry about 10,000 miles expiring!

  7. So I guess I’m out of luck if I only set up an Elevate account in late December for the SPG transfer?

  8. Nice folks at Alaska Mileage Plan and OMAAT. Thanks for letting me know first thing on the Starwood bonus to Elevate which I did that day. Just moved my Elevate miles over to MP and noticed that pleasant surprise 10K bonus. Sure diff from AA /DL plans who usually reward you negatively.
Keep up the good work Lucky and team

  9. Damn you’re right! I saw something about this in the am, check and didn’t see anything. But just now I saw my account and sure enough it was 10k miles more than this morning.

  10. I agree w @hc – I have an Elevate account, but never got an email from Alaska with a new Mileage Plan account. Any ideas?

  11. What if I just have a Mileage Plan account but no Elevate Account??? What do loyal Mileage Plan members get???

I can understand about making Elevate members feel welcome but this rubs me the wrong way.

  12. Hi! Should I reach out to Alaska if I have different email addresses and physical addresses for my Alaska and Elevate accounts? I have not seen the 10K post yet. I’ve had my Alaska account since I was a kid so it has an older email address and my hometown address, but I signed up for Elevate with a different email and my current address. My name and DOB are the same.

  13. Choice of 10,000 bonus miles or $100 discount is valid only for active members of Virgin America Elevate as of December 5, 2016 who were not members of Alaska Mileage Plan. Only one offer can be selected, and choice of offer cannot be changed after account activation. Qualifying members will have through January 31, 2017 to make their selection. Any individual may receive a maximum of one offer, even if they hold multiple separate Elevate accounts. Your welcome offer will be deposited in your account within 24 hours of activation.

    from the offer page

if you are already a member of MP you cannot get the 10K!!? ouch!

  14. Just got my 10k points this morning 🙂 ! What a great gesture from them, they really didn’t have to do that.

  15. Bad title (again). “Everyone” does not include loyal Alaska flyers who previously shunned Virgin America for Alaska. Great.

  16. Wait – same here. Just today get an email from Alaska that says I get 10K bonus ONLY if I don’t already have an Alaska account. Curious how others are handling this….

  17. I am also wondering what is better the 10,000 or the $100 credit? Does anyone know how that breakdown would calculate?

  18. got the email for my virgin account yesterday and clicked the link to link my alaska account for mvp gold and to get my 10k miles. the mileage transfer was almost instant when moving virgin miles, but this has been over 24 hours with no result. Anyone else successful in merging the accounts?
