Fascinating: Nightline Segment About MissTravel.com

30

I had heard in the past about MissTravel, a site which describes itself as follows:

MissTravel.com is the only online dating website for travelers, and more specifically, we match Generous travelers who hate to travel alone with Attractive travelers who would love the opportunity to travel the world for free.

Traveling to exotic new places and experiencing new cultures can be so much fun especially when you have the money to travel, and you have someone attractive to travel with (especially when it is with someone you really like). MissTravel.com was built to solve the big travel dilemma, by matching Generous frequent flyers who have the money but lack company with Attractive travel lovers who don’t have the financial resources to do so.

Besides matchmaking, MissTravel.com does a whole lot more. The website provides an incentive system that allows Generous members the ability to gift frequent flyer points to Attractive members (hence gifting them the gift of travel). Attractive members who accumulate enough frequent flyer points may redeem them for free airline tickets and hotel rooms, allowing them the opportunity to travel the world for free.

MissTravel

While the site has been around for years and I had heard of it before, Nightline ran an especially interesting segment last week, whereby they followed around two people who were meeting on a trip for the first time through MissTravel. Here’s how the setup is described:

Kesslyn was getting ready to jetset off to Miami Beach for a romantic weekend getaway with her date Dave, who was paying for the whole trip, from salsa dancing lessons to fine dining.

The only thing is, Kesslyn and Dave had never met before.

“I am actually going on a date with a guy and we are traveling to Miami and we are going to meet up for the first time he’s paying for this entire thing,” Kesslyn said.

Dave, a 26-year-old outside sales representative from Santa Monica, California, and Kesslyn, a 21-year-old neuroscience major at Tulane University, are like a growing number of couples seeking spring break romance with the help of MissTravel.com, an online dating website that pairs “attractive” women with “generous” men willing to foot the bill for trips all over the world.

That was actually super interesting. I’ll restrain myself from commenting on the two, other than to say that he’s significantly more attractive/pleasant-seeming than what I’d expect from a site like this, and she’s… well, if I don’t have anything nice to say, I just won’t say it.

What are your thoughts on MissTravel after seeing the segment (other than the interesting gender, and perhaps orientation, bias)?

Tom Leykis interviewed this guy and gave his thoughts on the idea.
I looked around it, but didn't see anyone that I would waste my companion ticket on.
Might be worth it if you found someone you found interesting and you have extra miles without a use.

I would never ever give miles or money to someone I did not know, if I ever tried this I would buy the ticket, this ensures you have the correct name, gender etc. I would also not put them on the hotel so if it does not work out, they can find their own room.

    On the Grindr comment.
I was in the Skyclub @ EWR once.
I saw a guy there playing with his phone and I started to suspect something was up.
Later, he and another guy were seated in front of me, in overhearing their conversation, it appears he was a Diamond and upgraded a guy he met on Grindr. It was unclear if there was any Larry Craig action involved.

    @Peter lmao!

I once loaded Grindr in the air for a laugh on a UA flight (yay for gogo wifi). I got a message from a guy who told me he was at the Hyatt Regency SFO, I told him I was at 35,000 feet over Nebraska :)

    +1 pavel

BTW, if the guy is "generous", shouldn't he fly the chick in first class?

That's just sad. He needs to get out on his own, sit down for a drink and chat up someone instead of being a sucker. As for her, MissTravelHo, some skank gets a free vacation so she can hit on another guys while they're out together. I guess she figured if he was dumb enough to pay for her vacation that she could get away with treating him like dirt too.

net-net: that was brutal to watch and watched like an ad showing you why NOT to use this website if you're the 'generous' guy. dude, next time save the money and hire an escort- she'll at least pretend to like you, not hit on other guys at the bar, and she's a sure thing.

@Peter haha the mile high grindr

What happened to just getting hammered at a bar/club and taking someone home, this seems like a lot of time/money for sex.

    @matt

The site is a offshoot from a sugar baby/daddy dating site, expect the generous member pays in this case.

  10. Matt Guest

@Lucky from the verbiage it sounds like someone can accumulate miles from multiple people, therefore sounds like they are gifting/transferring miles to another account. I'd be interested to see how this works and whether the site is eating the transfer fees in the form of a subscription payment. Thoughts?

Attractive members who accumulate enough frequent flyer points may redeem them for free airline tickets

Nope this is a Brandon Wade operation. Their main site is seekingarrangement com

    WM, 23, with copious miles seeks M who enjoys showers at 38,000 feet. #max2 #krug #top ;-)

The mere possibility of being stuck far from home with a creep who thinks he deserves something from me would be enough to totally put me off to this service. It's bad enough to be travelling on my own and have a creep latch on to me while I'm walking down the street. At least I can shake that one off.

  15. Andyandy Guest

Wow, that was painful to watch. Nightline made the guy look really pathetic. Of course, he may be really pathetic.

umm.. that guy can do better. He's actually kinda cute.

That whole exchange was just awkward though.

Money points laundering isn't what's happening.

Another Boarding Area blogger actually tried it out - she wrote about it.

  20. pavel Guest

I watched this expecting to be indignant but ultimately it's just really sad.

  21. Lantean Diamond

the word you're looking for is... slut (for her). the dude is totally doable but the fact that he has to resort to his makes him look like a loser.

  22. Dkls Guest

@Lucky do you think that website is doing points/miles laundering? I think there are lots of restriction when gift miles, one is you can't trade your point/miles, but seems to me that's what this website is dong...

  23. Kieran Guest

Redeem points for questionable soft service that might provide hard product - that'll never end in tragedy, right? :-)

  24. Matt Guest

How are they able to gift frequent flyer miles/points to others, is the site paying the transfer fee to the airline in the form of a membership fee???

    1. lucky OMAAT

@ Matt -- As far as I know, they're literally just suggesting redeeming miles out of your account directly for them. I don't think there's any transfer of miles/points involved.

  25. Jonathan New Member

Are we sure MissTravel isn't a fully-owned affiliate of Ashley Madison? It just doesn't pass the smell test at all.

    1. lucky OMAAT

@ Jonathan -- Hah, generally agree...
