In early 2025, Frontier Airlines announced plans to introduce first class, along with several other initiatives intended to become more competitive when it comes to premium demand and loyalty. While first class was initially supposed to be rolled out as of late 2025, that timeline didn’t stick.
There’s now an update, as we have more of a sense of when this product will launch. For that matter, we’ve learned more about the soft product, and this will be even more basic than we were expecting…
Frontier Airlines first class formally launches March 2027
View from the Wing reports on a memo to Frontier flight attendants, about the carrier’s rollout of first class. For context, Frontier plans to reconfigure its entire fleet to add eight first class seats at the front of the cabin, with two rows of seats in a 2-2 configuration. Specifically, the airline has selected the Geven Comoda seating platform.
Up until now, we haven’t known the timeline for this being introduced, though now we know. The expectation is that Frontier will start reconfiguring planes with first class as of late October 2026, and then seats will be on sale for travel as of March 5, 2027. So while the seats will already be in service, and some customers will luck out, that’s the formal launch plan.
The expectation is that all planes will have first class by then. That’s obviously a fast timeline, but keep in mind most of the cabin will remain unchanged, so it shouldn’t take much time to reconfigure each aircraft.
This is where it gets interesting. Initially Frontier hadn’t revealed any details about its first class soft product, but now it has. Here’s what Frontier’s first class page says:
First Class seats offer our most spacious seating experience, providing exceptional comfort and additional personal space at the front of the aircraft. These seats are pre-reclined and do not convert into lie-flat beds.
Complimentary food and beverages are not included with the First Class experience. However, a variety of food and beverage options are available for purchase by all passengers.
So Frontier’s first class seats will be “pre-reclined” (meaning they won’t recline), and won’t actually offer complimentary snacks and drinks, so it’ll be just like economy in that regard. Interestingly, when Frontier first shared renderings of its new first class seats in 2025, there were buttons that made it look like there would be a recliner function, but clearly they’ve backtracked on that.

On the plus side, the seats are expected to feature in-seat power, which is a pretty novel amenity for Frontier. The carrier is also going from offering no Wi-Fi, to offering Starlink Wi-Fi as of mid-2027, so that’s pretty exciting.
Frontier first class isn’t much of a first class
There’s no single right or wrong way to offer a premium product. However, I feel like Frontier might be taking the wrong strategy here. What Frontier is offering is essentially more along the lines of the initial Spirit “Big Front Seat” — you get more space, and nothing else.
This just strikes me as a missed opportunity, because I feel like psychologically, willingness to pay is going to be substantially higher if you just include free alcoholic drinks and at least some sort of food. It’s not like I was expecting them to install ovens and have hot meals (JetBlue’s new first class will only have cold food).

But I feel like if the airline just invested $10 in drinks & snacks they could charge more, and would also expand the potential customer base. Whether logical or not, there are some number of passengers who would be more likely to even consider a product if it actually had a dedicated soft product, rather than just being a more spacious seat. At least that’s my take.
Bottom line
Frontier Airlines is expected to shortly start reconfiguring planes with first class seats, with the plan being for tickets to be on sale for travel as of March 5, 2027. While Frontier first class will have first class-style seats (minus the recline), it sounds like there won’t be any differentiation in terms of the soft product, as food and drinks will still be available for purchase.
I would’ve liked the airline to actually roll out a differentiated soft product, but it sounds like that’s not happening. I’m curious to see what the soft product will be like. And at least Starlink is also good news.
What do you make of Frontier’s first class concept?
It’s F9, so I didn’t expect much (other than the cute animals on the tail…), but no recline? Frontier Go(ne) Wild!
People seem to love ZIPAIR even though they're a no-frills business class where you have to buy your food and amenity kit.
This really doesn't bother me too much. If the hard product is good (comfy seat, fast wi-fi) I'm pretty sure folks can bring their own food.
(At least ZIPAIR has lie-flat…)
I think the main mistake/loss opportunity is not offering more rows and seats in the "first" cabin. My prediction is F will sell out quickly on most Frontier flights.
Agree with this completely.
gotta love a brand that stays consistent to the bitter end
How pathetic of Frontier.
I won’t take this news lying down - or leaning back.
I like when food and drinks are bundled for easy business reimbursement.
