The Citi ThankYou program has just added its newest transfer partner, as it’s now possible to move points at a 1:1 ratio from select cards to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank. There’s even a 30% transfer bonus to celebrate this launch, which has the potential to be a great deal.
Transfer Capital One miles to Japan Airlines with 30% bonus
Effective immediately, the Japan Airlines Mileage Bank program has been added as a Citi ThankYou transfer partner. If you go to Citi’s website for points transfers, you’ll now see this functionality live.
If you have a card earning Citi ThankYou points that has an annual fee, the standard transfer ratio is 1:1, while if you have a Citi ThankYou card without an annual fee, the standard ratio is 1:0.7. There are several great cards earning Citi ThankYou points, including the Citi Strata Premier® Card (learn more) and Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (learn more), and it’s easy to combine points between the cards.
To celebrate the launch of this partnership, we’re seeing a 30% transfer bonus between the two programs from September 20 through October 24, 2026, so through this promotion you’d get 1,300 Japan Airlines Mileage Bank miles for every 1,000 Citi ThankYou points transferred, assuming you have a premium card.

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is increasingly partnering with transferable points currencies, which is great. Among the major bank transferable points currencies, you can also move points to Japan Airlines from Bilt Rewards (at a 1:1 ratio) and Capital One (at a 4:3 ratio). So it’s awesome to see Citi adding Japan Airlines at a 1:1 ratio.

Is this Citi to Japan Airlines transfer bonus worth it?
Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is a niche frequent flyer program that we historically haven’t paid much attention to in the United States. When it comes to actually redeeming for travel on Japan Airlines, I’d say the program is sort of valuable:
- Japan Airlines releases the same saver level award space to its own members as it does to partner program members; the advantage is that you get access to some awards that are priced a little higher, but with much better availability
- Redemption rates through Japan Airlines Mileage Bank may be a little lower than through partner programs, but given how hard it is to accrue the points, that’s not necessarily the reason you’d want to redeem through the program
- One advantage of Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is that you get access to award space 360 days out, right when the schedule opens, which is ideal in terms of accessing first and business class awards, especially given that the airline consistently opens award seats when the schedule opens
Japan Airlines Mileage Bank also has lucrative redemption rates on other airlines, including oneworld partners, and select non-oneworld partners, like Air France, Emirates, etc. For example, below is the distance based business class award chart.

There’s also a oneworld award chart, if you’re traveling on two or more oneworld airlines, with the benefit of multiple stopovers being allowed.

One thing to keep in mind is that Japan Airlines Mileage Bank has restrictions on who you can redeem for. You can only redeem miles for family members, who you are related to by marriage or blood. So if you’re going to participate in Mileage Bank, you’ll definitely want to read up on some of the technicalities before making a transfer, as this isn’t as straightforward as some other programs.

So yeah, I’d say there’s quite a bit of value to be had, potentially, especially with the 30% transfer bonus. However, you’ve gotta know what you’re doing, as this isn’t the most straightforward currency to redeem.
Bottom line
Citi ThankYou has just added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a transfer partner, and the standard transfer ratio is 1:1 on premium cards. On top of that, through October 24, 2026, you can receive a 30% bonus on transfers, offering a 1:1.3 ratio. This could be a very good deal, though I also wouldn’t move points without a specific use in mind.
What do you make of Citi ThankYou adding Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a transfer partner, and having a 30% bonus for a limited time?
The premium seats are snapped up in minutes on many JL flights when the schedule opens, so AA/BA points aren't gonna cut it there. Cathay would work too, but the rates are higher.
You can also find J at 80-110k US-TYO on lots of dates which in 2026 is pretty good.
I've heard that as long as the member redeeming the points is on the reservation, they almost never check relationship. It's largely to prevent points brokers.
Some of them would be hard to prove without quite a lot of documentation.
Great addition for Citi (after getting AA), especially at the 1:1 transfer ratio, and nice to have an alternative to Bilt for transfers to JAL.
What about cancellation fees? Any?
Am I correct that with Mileage Bank, it is impossible to book something like JFK-HND-BKK (two international segments) with a connection at HND, and that I would need to book two separate award tickets?
It's not possible online for JAL metal (for partner metal it is possible under the partner chart). However if not segments are available separately, sometimes a phone agent is able to price and issue it as a through award.
