American Express has announced major changes to the popular American Express® Business Gold Card (review). The card is getting several new perks, additional flexible bonus categories, and more, but the annual fee is also increasing, and one other benefit is being taken away. Let’s cover all the details, starting with the bad news.

Amex Business Gold annual fee increasing

Let’s start with the bad news. The Amex Business Gold Card currently has an annual fee of $295 (Rates & Fees). For applications as of February 1, 2024, that annual fee will change to $375, representing an $80 increase. That’s a significant increase, but I think many can recoup the annual fee with some of the new perks.

Amex Business Gold loses 25% Amex Travel rebate

The Amex Business Gold Card has historically offered up to a 25% rebate on redemptions through Amex Travel when using “Pay with Points.” This applies when redeeming for a premium cabin flight or for travel on a designated airline. Unfortunately, with this card refresh, that benefit has been eliminated. However, nothing is changing to the ability to transfer Amex points to travel partners at a 1:1 ratio. There are still lots of great uses of Amex Membership Rewards points.

Amex Business Gold bonus category changes

One of the reasons that the Amex Business Gold Card is worth having is because of its bonus categories. The card offers 4x Membership Rewards points on your top two eligible spending categories each billing cycle, on up to $150,000 (and then 1x) in combined spending per calendar year.

Going forward, the card will have a total of six categories to choose from, comprised of the following:

  • Purchases at U.S. gas stations
  • Purchases at U.S. restaurants, including takeout and delivery
  • Purchases at U.S. media providers for advertising in select media, including online, radio, and TV
  • Purchases at U.S. electronics goods retailers and software and cloud system providers
  • Purchases of transit, including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
  • Purchases of monthly wireless telephone service charges made from a wireless telephone provider in the U.S.

Specifically, those two last bonus categories are the new ones, and they join the other four (which have been the standard ones for quite some time).

On top of that, the Amex Gold Card will start offering 3x Membership Rewards points on eligible purchases through Amex Travel.

Amex Business Gold up to $395 in annual statement credits

The Amex Business Gold Card now offers up to $395 in statement credits annually (Enrollment required). This includes the following:

  • Up to $240 back annually for eligible purchases with FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores (up to $20 per month)
  • Up to $155 back annually for a monthly Walmart+ membership subject to auto-renewal (which ordinarily costs $12.95 per month)
Get up to $20 back monthly with Grubhub

Amex Business Gold cell phone protection

Going forward, the Amex Business Gold Card will offer a cell phone protection plan. You can be reimbursed the lesser of your repair or replacement costs following damage (such as a cracked screen) or theft for a maximum of $800 per claim when your cell phone is listed on a wireless bill, and an eligible card account paid the prior month’s wireless bill.

Coverage for a Stolen or damaged Eligible Cellular Wireless Telephone is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limits of liability of this benefit. The maximum liability is $800, per claim, per Eligible Card Account. Each claim is subject to a $50 deductible. Coverage is limited to two (2) claims per Eligible Card Account per 12 month period.

  • Eligibility and Benefit level varies by Card. Terms, Conditions and Limitations Apply.
  • Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details.
  • Underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company.

Amex Business Gold rose gold design

Much like the personal version of the card, the Amex Business Gold Card now comes with the option for a rose gold design. This is something that many card members like, so I’m sure this will prove to be popular.

My take on these Amex Business Gold Card changes

The Amex Business Gold Card has always been more of a niche business card. It has a fairly high annual fee, and it has been useful primarily if you spend a lot in the categories in which the card offers bonus points. However, it doesn’t have the same wide appeal as a product like the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card (review) or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (review) (Rates & Fees).

So, what do I make of these changes? Here are a few thoughts:

  • The cell phone protection makes this a more compelling card in terms of offering perks beyond just bonus points, so I’m happy to see that, especially with the opportunity to potentially earn 4x points on those purchases
  • I think the $80 annual fee hike can very nicely be offset by the new credits of up to $395; even if you don’t value the Walmart+ membership, getting $240 toward FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores, is pretty awesome
  • I’m not thrilled to see the 25% Pay with Points rebate being eliminated on some redemptions, though personally that wasn’t my preferred use of Amex points anyway

On balance I’d say these changes are positive, primarily because I think the card’s annual fee is much easier to justify than before, thanks to the up to $240 in annual credits. Admittedly everyone will have a different take on that depending on their own behavior.

Bottom line

The Amex Business Gold Card is undergoing some major changes. The card’s annual fee is increasing by $80, though the card is getting more flexible bonus categories, cell phone protection, and up to $395 in annual credits. People will have mixed feelings about these changes, though personally, I think the annual fee will be easier to justify thanks to the added credits.

There's no mention on the $10 Uber. Is that eliminated too?

    Ben,

It’s very interesting that you don’t even mention, arguably, the two biggest changes; If they are indeed dropping 4X shipping and airfare (direct from airline) then this certainly deserves a mention. This is a travel blog and you cater to lots of frequent flyers, many of them, like me, who put lots of airfare on a variety of cards, including the Amex Business Gold.

You also don’t say when these changes take place. Was I a fool when I booked a $6K US-Asia J-class ticket this morning? I put it on my Gold, already spending those 24,000+ MR Points in my head. Does this mean I’m only getting 6K? I’d have thrown it on another card for sure!

So, black or white…Is the 4X for airfare and shipping gone?

While Amex is getting more greedy, they don't leave their customers hanging.
      And read your mails.

According to communications I received, it would be combined from Oct 3 - Jan 31. Then new one is effective Feb 1.
Now don't get picky and ask about timezone, it wasn't communicated.

  3. Larry Guest

Losing the shipping bonus is a big one. I don't know of any other card that offered anything like that. Coupled with the 25% points rebate and that was a flyer's dream.

  4. DavidM Guest

Well, these changes to the Business version likely portend changes are also coming to the personal Gold Card. Any guesses to that happening, Ben?

  5. Rik Guest

Sadly, my wife and I cancelled 4 AMEX Biz Gold cards today... The$600K shipping spend now goes elsewhere...

  6. Andrew Y Guest

Yes, they eliminated the shipping bonus!! This is terrible and eliminates most of the value of the Amex Gold for me...

  7. BenjaminGuttery Diamond

Yeah Ben, I think that this post already needs to be updated. The other missing categories and the fact that e-commerce businesses seem to be very affected by the changes is 100% worth mentioning and going over.

  8. PT Guest

They dumped shipping for bonus spend.... I have 4 biz gold cards to split shipping and ad spend, now I need to downsize.

    1. Jetiquette Guest

I max out the 4x category on ad spend by itself.

  9. John Guest

I'm in with crowd. Dropping 4x on shipping kills the card for me.

  10. DT Diamond

Looks like I’m dropping this one when the annual fee is due. I used it primarily for ad buying. Already get Walmart+ with the personal platinum card, and not interested in the $20 monthly credits. The Chase Ink preferred gets me 3x points for ads, so the additional 1 point per $ doesn’t justify the fee.

    1. Jetiquette Guest

That doesn't make sense. With the $20 credits, which are easy to use, your AF actually became less. You don't/can't use $20 at office supply stores monthly?

  11. James K. Guest

Yeah weird not to mention shipping and airfare being dropped

  12. Mitchell Coulter Guest

The fact that Amex eliminated shipping and airfare is insane. Stop giving credits and give the business owners what they actually want.

  13. Eskimo Guest

Did Amex sponsor this just like Capital One a few weeks ago?

Losing 4x on Airfare and shipping seems significant as that seems to be quite a standout for business cards.

Let's just hope the personal card doesn't get nerfed soon too.

    1. BenjaminGuttery Diamond

Well, since Ben didn't mention it, then NO. Ben realizes that everyone has different case uses for each card, and in Ben's personal small business case: the card still makes since. Not for everyone (like me for example).

    2. Eskimo Guest

I not suggesting this new benefit is for everyone but leaving out one of the key benefit that stands out among other business cards seem a bit strange?
AFAIK, no other business cards give 4x on these.

The one thing I understand if Ben overlooked is the additional card fee since I don't think his business have too many employees.

It's quite the fee for the Platinum employee cards. It's just $50 for the Gold.
Then there is the issue of asking your employees to carry multiple company cards in addition to all the cards they have.

Now suddenly the Venture X business seems a lot more interesting.
As for Amex, seems they are drowning in greed and forcing their customers to try something else.

  14. Michael Guest

I cannot believe they eliminated shipping. Absolutely terrible. Amex better rethink this change fast (see Delta pushback).

  15. Jetiquette Guest

Overall positive changes. Anyone that needs the shipping perks will have to use CIP now.

  16. Robin Guest

Lucky, as others have pointed out, shipping is being eliminated as a 4x category. That's a dealbreaker for e-commerce business owners.

Also, if I'm reading it correctly, AmEx is widening what qualifies as a software provider.

  17. Jacobo Guest

My reading of the email was that 4x points on flight purchases made on airline websites was being removed . Did I mis-understand that ?

  18. Carl Guest

Shipping and airfare have been removed from the 4x categories, these are horrible changes

  19. Richard Guest

I have 3 of these for 4x on shipping. All 3 will now be closed. Fortunately, chase ink 3x is still available. Sadly, while amex makes minor adjustments to cards to pretend they are improving things they are systematically destroying cards for small businesses. One tiny step forward for every 10 huge steps backward. At least for me...

  20. Allen Guest

Losing 4x on shopping is devastating for ecommerce operators. Chase Ink Preferred just moved up in the rankings.
