Update: Mini-LAX Meetup Tonight

Yesterday I wrote about how I was hoping to have a mini meet-up at LAX either today or tomorrow — I appreciate all the interest (and I guess we need to do these in other places as well!), and promised I’d share an update ASAP.

Based on the responses, it seems like most people are available tonight, so let’s move forward with that. I’m so appreciative of how flexible you guys have been with this. I realize the last minute and Monday night nature of this isn’t ideal.

So let’s plan to meet at the field outside of In-N-Out on Sepulveda at around 9PM for some plane spotting. There’s usually a good amount of parking there, and it’s easy to find — there are usually tons of plane spotters there. From there folks can walk over to grab some food to-go if they want, and we’ll just keep it very casual.

To manage expectations as much as possible:

  • This will be really informal, and my goal is for OMAAT readers to meet one another, in addition to me wanting to meet you guys and thank you for reading
  • I know 9PM is late, at least for me; I’m a morning person and have been up since 3AM PT since I just flew in from the East Coast and am still on that time, so if I’m yawning tonight it’s not because I’m not enjoying talking to you guys
  • I pride myself in being a punctual person, though the logistical challenge here is that we’re filming something on a plane parked at LAX this evening, and we have a very specific time we’re able to do that; I’m told that should be wrapped up by 8:30PM

It kills me to be late to anything, so please don’t hate me if I’m a few minutes late. I’ll do everything I can to be there by 9PM (hopefully earlier), and appreciate the patience.

There will be a couple of people joining me for something I’m filming (like I said, I’m trying to highlight there’s a big community of people who are avgeeks/into points & miles, and it’s not just me).

To be honest I’m not fully sure of the logistics of what they’re hoping to film and what they aren’t. They might be interviewing people, and of course you can choose whether or not you’d like to participate in that. But mainly I’m just looking forward to meeting you guys.

Please comment below if you think you’ll be able to make it. If this goes well I might try to do another one tomorrow during the day once my schedule is finalized.

I look forward to hopefully meeting some of you!

  1. Damn…I am away for business. I would totally come to the next one as long as I know ahead of time.

  2. @ MP — I don’t know exactly yet, but I plan to be there until at least 10:30PM or so. So if you get there at 9:30-10 I should still be there. Hope to say hi. 🙂

  3. An unusual hour for a meet up, but I’ll do my very best to be there for 9.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone.

  4. Imagine telling your spouse that you’re going to a last minute meetup at 9/10pm. Sounds suspicious!

  5. I’ll be there… benefit of the late night meetup is traffic on the 405 shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

  6. @ Ron — I figured that was at least one of the advantages of the timing. We could have also done 3-4PM, but I feel like that would have been horrible for traffic, and would have been even less desirable.

  7. Aww, Ben I would’ve definitely made it. But my Eva flight is cancelled due to the strike so I’m not gonna be back in LAX in the evening like planned. Any other LAX/LA meetups in the foreseeable future. And Matthew too! Would’ve loved to chat with a fellow Ua flyer 2 for 1!

  8. I’m in LAX on the way to DFW from BKK. If I can’t get a flight to DFW I just might join you all.

  9. Argh, so frustrating it’s at night. I work down the block and would love to come to a daytime one (I hope it works out for tomorrow). Would be really nice to meet Ben, Matthew and everyone else though.

  10. @Pauline I’m in the same predicament! I can’t bring my spouse though coz someone’s gotta watch our kid. 😀 But I *may* be able to make it as well. BTW if anyone’s coming from the OC, maybe we can try to carpool. LOL

  11. Plane spotting with Lucky? Hell yes! I’m there! (Excited to meet fellow OMAAT readers too lol).

  12. Is this why you suddenly scheduled this meetup?

“There will be a couple of people joining me for something I’m filming (like I said, I’m trying to highlight there’s a big community of people who are avgeeks/into points & miles, and it’s not just me). To be honest I’m not fully sure of the logistics of what they’re hoping to film and what they aren’t. They might be interviewing people, and of course you can choose whether or not you’d like to participate in that. But mainly I’m just looking forward to meeting you guys.”

  13. Fabulous! See you all there! We’ll pass the word in our local LA points/miles groups too – see you and MK later! In n Out open til 1am FYI –

  14. Lucky: I assume you mean the one north of LAX on Sepulveda (near Westchester Pkwy) and not the one, also on Sepulveda, south of the 105. Right? (Of course there would be two.)

  15. @ Robert Concord — Yes, as Ben said in the post yesterday “I’ll be at LAX this week doing some filming, the details of which I look forward to sharing soon. It’s all about miles and points and travel (though don’t worry, it won’t be anything too detailed). Rather than just making it about me, however, I’d like to do what I can to showcase the broad variety of people who love miles & points, and how much of a community this is. Even though I haven’t met most of you, I still consider you to mostly be friends & family (for better or worse).

  16. Coming from Ireland, I definitely would have appreciated a little more notice, but I DEFINITELY would love to make it to one of these meet ups!!! Hope it goes better than expected!! Hopefully we can get a blog post with photos about how this meetup goes

  17. Anyone know anything about this project? I gave $100.00 but I guess I was suckered. LOL

  18. I would love to be there but sadly I’m on a Delta MD88 delayed at Indianapolis on my way to Atlanta! More meet-ups would be appreciated though!

  19. I’d love to be able to meet others from this site, is this a new thing and what other cities are expected to join this cool meet up?

Is it just for the USA or other countries as well?

  20. I’ll be there around 9:30 or so after I get out of work here at the airport. See you all soon!

  21. I arrived about 9 and I can’t remember when I’ve been in such a traffic jam. Saw about 20-30 people standing there as I drove by but didn’t see any good options to park so I went home. Luckily a short drive. Keep up the good work Ben and maybe you’ll have another one. Looking forward to tonight’s write up

  22. @tracy….it was like nothing I have ever seen at LAX. Ben can draw a crowd, lol! I was in an Uber. Had him stop and go around the block. Stayed thirty minutes, met Ben and a few others, and the driver made it back to me in that time.

  23. Just reading this now. Bummer, i would have shown up. Please do this again and see if you can give a bit more notice

  24. Thanks Ben for the LAX pop up event. It was great to meet you and chat with some of your other fans.

  25. So bummed missing this by exactly 24 hours. Arriving Tuesday night and staying at the Marriott LAX to do some college tours with my son. Was already planning on an In-N-Out run at that location right after we land.

  26. Had a great time meeting so many cool people that enjoy talking points, miles, and traveling while watching planes land and takeoff. Thanks Lucky for putting this together and the burger from In-N-Out.

  27. Sadly I was there on thursdays last week before heading back home to europe wish I were able to meeting you…

  28. I enjoyed last night.

Lots of great people and interesting conversations. The macaroons were very welcome – as was the beer!

Thanks again Ben for arranging this.
