KLM 747 – nose or upper deck?
Hi there,
will fly on a KLM 747 in World Business Class in a few weeks. Still cant decide between sitting in the upper deck or in the nose. I have been to the upper deck before (on ANA) – have heard that the nose is much quieter? What do you people think?
Regards
Nightliner
Well, I’ve never been on the upper deck of a 747, so I can’t offer a direct comparison. However, I have been in the nose of a 747 (British Airways, London-to-LA, Seat 1K) and I really enjoyed it. I liked the fact that no one was in front of me. On the plane I was on, there were only two seats in Row 1, with a very wide aisle between them. So that, coupled with being right up in the nose of the plane, made for a very private, quiet atmosphere (enhanced even more because seat 1A was empty). I thought it was a great seat, and I’d pick it again given the chance.
I personally would recommend the nose, simply because KLM has a couple of single seats where you are guaranteed not to have a seatmate, which if you ask me would be better. If you do not mind having a seatmate, I would go with the upper deck. It is much quieter.

Congratulation you flew BA in F, even if Lucky call is the world best J it’s not KLM J.

This is the KLM J seatmap, with 1 and 4 A as single seats like @Sheldon Cooper Enthusiast says. Note that 4 E is also single, but in the middle of the cabin.

You will note @AKguy that KLM packs in 3 seats in that space in the front, not 2 like in BA First.

Well, excuse me for posting. I thought I was being helpful in some small way. In the future I’ll be sure to submit all of my posts to you in advance, for your approval.

The problem is that you are comparing apples (BA 747 F) to pears (KLM 747 J).
To give an example in the near future both BA and Norwegian will be flying B787-9 out of London. The BA 787-9 is 4 class, Norwegian is 2 class. Both has the best cabin at the pointy end.
Now how much value do you think it would bring to somebody ask about the best seat and service level in Norwegian Premium economy if I start going on about how lovely my last flight upfront in BA F was?
Now comments like noise levels and air quality compared to a A330 or B777, or if the electric windows works or not is information that is similar across airlines and is helpful. Or yes that there is nobody in front you that is also helpful.
Talking about how one airline interior for that plane type is wonderful is of little help when somebody is ask of help with a vastly different product.
Your post here was a helpful addition, on this post not so much in my not very humble opinion.

And no you don’t need my permission or anyone else permission to post what ever the hell you want on the internet, just don’t get surprised if somebody else voice their opinion back to you on the subject.
Thanks for the advice – 4E looks tempting and frightening – I guess I should bring a crown of some sort, since it is a real throne 😉 Unfortunately, the two other singles are already taken. I am in 1K for now.
Any advice on the noise compared to upstairs? Some ppl say there is less noise in the nose, others say the opposite…
The few times I flown business internationally on a 747, I’ve always selected a seat on the upper deck when there is J seating up there. Typically there is around 20 seats which makes its a very small and private space. In addition because of the curvature of the wall, the window seats have a sizable side storage compartment — very convenient.
I flew upstairs on KLM last year and really enjoyed it. There were only about 8 passengers in the upstairs cabin so it felt really private and noise seemed less noticeable. Window seats do offer more space, but you will be climbing over a seat partner.

Thanks for the advice – KLM unfortunately appear to have done away with these compartments on the upper deck (hopefully leading to wider seats). I think I’ll stick with the nose for now.
