Discrepancies in United airlines international free bags allowance

Discrepancies in United airlines international free bags allowance

In the span of about a month, I flew the shanghai – Chicago route twice.
On my first trip, the free bags allowed were two pieces, extra bag cost usd $200 as informed by the ground ticketing agent.

On my second trip, I was surprised that it was only one bag free, second bag costs US$100.
Do you know why there is such lack of uniform policies pertaining to free checked bags? Sure feels like United airline is nickel and dining it’s loyal fliers!

Both flights were booked through Expedia. Is there a way of getting my second bag charged reimbursed by the airline. I had to pay the $100 in order to bring on a second bag, which previously was allowed, just barely a month prior.

Flying today from Shanghai to Chicago and not too happy about this hefty $100 charge for my second bag that should be free!

Please advise!
Sleepless in Shanghai Pudong!

@Violin888 If you were traveling economy, the luggage allowance seems to indeed be only one free bag (https://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/travel/Pages/CheckedBaggage.aspx). I would just be thankful that that gave you a pass one time. Business does allow for two bags and if you have *A gold status it seems like you’d be able to get the second bag free as well.
