SPG, Thank You Points or Cash???

SPG, Thank You Points or Cash???

I have an upcoming stay for 3 nights in Salzburg and we’ve decided to stay at Hotel Goldener Hirsch. With SPG points the stay is 20K points or 10K plus $180. Currently a refundable rate online would be $240 a night. I feel that 1.2 cpp for SPG points (or 0.6 cpp with C+P, yuck) isn’t worth the redemption so I booked the cash rate. I’d still rather not pay $725 for 3 nights though.

I remembered that I have Thank You points from my Premier which are worth 1.25cpp and I can book the stay for 24K points per night (the rate is higher than the lower rate on SPG) so I’m getting about 1cpp for my TY points.

I don’t have any other flights planned in the upcoming year (so getting 1.6 cpp for American flights isn’t an option) and the other TY partners aren’t particularly appealing right now. I’m ready to book with the points but wondering if anyone has had experience using TY points for hotels???

@joeheg — Ick, that’s a tough choice. I definitely wouldn’t do C+P, but you might want to see if you can get the lower rate through TY by calling.
