Who has the better FF Program AA or Cathay?

Who has the better FF Program AA or Cathay?

1. Anonymous Guest

I’m going to be doing a fair amount of travel on Cathay and I given the downward spiral of AA’s FF program I was wondering what One World program you think is best to accrue miles with? Thanks!

A few questions:
– where are you based?
– are looking just to earn & burn miles or to earn status as well?
– would you be able to accrue the 4 segments necessary on AA for status, if that’s a goal?
– how would you plan to use the miles? domestic/shorthaul flights? longhaul international?

NYC based mostly flying to mainland china having been flying China Eastern but hate it. Fly mostly to either BJS or PEK. I would fly AA intercom in the US and Finnair to Europe or maybe sometimes to Asia. I would mostly use miles for long haul.

A lot of Cathay’s economy fares dont earn anything on AA (or Alaska’s program) so that alone could be worth crediting to Asia Miles where you’d at least earn something. However, since you’re based in the US, it may still be better to credit to AA or even Alaska.

In your shoes, crediting to AA still might be the best option though you should look into booking Cathay flights an an AA codeshare or maybe flying JAL and connecting in NRT instead.
