Varying Emirates YQ and VX J Redemption

Varying Emirates YQ and VX J Redemption

Have my eye on a VX redemption for EK JFK-MXP-JFK. 55k miles + $1000+ in taxes and fees, according to the VX calculator on the website. ITA Fare Matrix does indeed show a $1000+ YQ for some dates, but for others it randomly will reduce to $256. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why some dates have the steep YQ and some have the reduced. See screenshots here:

Does anyone know why the YQ changes so significantly from day to day? Also, I fed the agent dates where the lower YQ is being quoted, and she told me they would still charge $1000+. Shouldn’t it be reduced if it’s lower on the ticket?

Really interested to hear if anyone has encountered fluctuating YQ like this before, in general, and also in relationship to this specific VX redemption. Thx!

They have different booking codes, one is I the other O. These are the two business class fares they have. There is no doubt your reward ticket is coded for the higher YQ fare. I believe the award code is D, but I don’t know where to check the YQ fee for that.

Nice catch. I guess O is their discount business, and I is more expensive. Would certainly explain the price differences on the flights. According to expertflyer, you are correct. D is the bucket for saver business and also upgrades into business.
