Upgrading on Star Alliance

Upgrading on Star Alliance

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Hi –

My husband and I are planning to fly from Seattle to Rome in March of 2016. Quick question: what if we want to purchase an upgradable flight and use our miles (he has 130,000 and I have 71,000 United miles) to upgrade to business class? What is the best way to purchase the flight? Call United directly?

Thanks so much for your answer! It used to be so easy to upgrade and now it seems like a huge maze….

@Jann — It’s almost certainly not a good value, and not truly practical unless you have elite status with United.

You’re realistically going to be better off buying the additional miles (or taking advantage of a credit card bonus) in order to redeem for a straight award ticket. You’ll probably have better flight options, and it will cost less overall.
