Upgrading Iberia Issued Tickets on AA/BA (First)
Iberia had a $3000 RT business class fare LAX/JNB (AA to LHR, then BA LHR to JNB and BA on the two segments home) I couldn’t pass up that fare, it was almost half the fare offered by BA or AA on exactly the same flights. I now see that AA has a first upgrade awards available (LAX/LHR)…I can’t book it thru AA as Iberia issued my ticket and I’m not able to upgrade via Iberia because they claim they don’t offer first class and their system can’t even access first class awards. I’ve tried two separate Iberia agents and received the same answer. Are there any work-arounds that would allow me to upgrade my discount business class tickets to first class on either AA or BA code share flights for tickets issued by Iberia?
There are few (if any) sites I enjoy more than OMAAT, thanks for sharing all of your adventures and insights!
Other than the general incompetence of Iberia agents, I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t be able to upgrade using Iberian Avios. They allow first class awards on American and other oneworld carriers, and I don’t see why this would be any different.
That being said, I haven’t tried it, and the agents are really bad over there, so I don’t really know what would be involved in making this happen. 🙁
