Apologies if this has been asked already, but I couldn’t seem to find the answer.

I used AA miles to book two coach tickets from EWR-BKK through HKG on Cathay for an upcoming vacation that I’m hoping to upgrade into a premium cabin. As I understand Cathay tends to release more biz/first space as flights near, but what I can’t seem to find is how close to the flight I should be looking for this premium cabin space (i.e. a month, a week, 2 days, etc.).

Does anyone have a good feel for when this typically happens?

I used AA miles to book two coach seats on CX from EWR-BKK via HKG that I’m hoping to upgrade to a premium cabin. As I understand Cathay makes more premium cabin space available as the flight nears, but I’m having trouble finding out how close to the flight date I should be looking (i.e. a month, a week, 2 days, etc.). I’m about 6 weeks out from my flight right now, and at the moment nothing premium shows available. Does anyone have experience with optimal times?

Business Class space opens up maybe 1-2 weeks before departure? I’m not entirely sure. CX J space used to be plentiful but the AAdvantage devaluation made people snap up a ton of seats.

If all your flights are currently in coach and you booked before devaluation, changing the award to business class would reprice it to the new rates today – 70k miles per person each way.

Thanks David! At least helps me narrow down the time frame a bit! Unfortunately I had no luck booking anything pre-devaluation, so I’m resigned to paying the new price.

I’d keep monitoring space though – something might pop up sooner!

Second what David W says. I’d check on a regular basis as sometimes I do see J seats being released sporadically.
