Upgrading a United award ticket
If I were to buy (with miles) a United Business class ticket to Europe, what charges do I incur should I decide to upgrade to First class?
Don’t believe you can upgrade an award ticket purchased with miles.

Sorry, maybe I worded the question badly. I assume that I would have to cancel the first ticket, have the miles redeposited into my account, then repurchase the new ticket. I did this awhile back on AA and was guessing that it would be allowed at UA. It did cost me like $200 or something to essentially “upgrade/redeposit/reissue” the PNR which was actually for 2 people.
You would pay point difference and change fee based on your status per ticket.
You can probably do it online, where you change your flights. You can also call UA Mileage Plus. I booked a ticket for a friend traveling on OZ HKG-ICN-JFK in J. Booked before all the UA changes to their online search and modified routing rules. I called UA MP to change the ICN-JFK leg to F and only paid the difference in miles. I dont have any kind of status with UA but I cant remember if I was charged a change fee.
You would pay the difference in miles, along with the relevant change fee: http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2016/08/03/united-mileageplus-updates-2016/
