United from Newark to Maui

United from Newark to Maui

I had booked a flight to Maui on United. I’m 1k and wanted to use an upgrade certificate for an upgrade for my wife and I but it filled up rather quickly and looks like I’m not going to get it.

I cancelled the ticket and bought the flight outright on miles for 95k miles each one way. Did I make a mistake here or is this a ridiculously high amount of miles for a one way to Hawaii?

I also paid cash for the retun via SFO and they confirmed an upgrade on the OGG- SFO leg with my regional upgrade and am waitlisted on the SFO-EWR leg.

Any tips here or is the best way to do it if I must have first class. Wife is pregnant and it’s our anniversary so wanted it to be a special trip.

95k per person is the right price for EWR-OGG on United…but it’s an “Everyday” award, not saver. A saver award would be 50k per person one way.

If you must have First, then keep checking for SAVER award space on the route. If it shows up for your outbound, see if you can cancel and rebook online. If that doenst work, call United and have them do it. I dont believe you’d be charged any fees as a 1K.

For the return, it’s youre decision if you want to wait to see if the upgrade will clear or if you want to cancel the ticket and rebook using miles.
