Trying to understand Delta awards

Trying to understand Delta awards

  1. MdBoater New Member

I got the Delta Reserve Business Card last year, I really like it for the benefits and the fact that traveling with my family the money saved on luggage fees is about the cost of the card. Well I have long known that sky miles are referred to as sky pesos, I did not get the card for award travel, but now trying to possibly use them I really understand. Does anyone know of any trends to look for when the mileage needed may go down or is it just random? I’m looking 5 months out and they want 137,000 for delta one >_< I have a ton of miles but I hate the feeling like I am getting ripped off lol.

There’s a pretty nice post about this on this blog, found here http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2015/06/12/what-no-one-else-will-tell-you-about-booking-delta-awards/

Honestly, I think SkyMiles are best for travel on their partners since those are always priced the lowest. Delta isnt that great with releasing saver award space. Not to mention you can only redeem up to Business Class. If you manage to snag a seat on a DL flight at the saver level, awesome!

What route are you searching for that’s 137k?

Ok thank you for that post. I am flying with my fiancé to Manila to see her family again before we get married. She finally got her schedule in order so we are set on August 9th from Baltimore or any of the WAS airports. Early last week before she was certain it was 70,000 miles then around Friday it went to 110,000, the weekend 137,500, and now this morning 187,500. I was thinking of trying to book a Delta Korean partner award but none are available that day and then book the other with Korean miles. But truthfully I would rather save my Chase points and try to get rid of my Delta miles which I have a lot more of.

I’d also try and start from another airport, then buying a positioning flight for BWI/IAD/DCA to that airport. I looked at WAS-MNL and noticed that it wants to connect you via Detroit. I changed the search to DTW-MNL and it gave me 70k Business class DTW-PEK-PVG-MNL. Not the best routing but its the saver price with the PEK-PVG-MNL legs on China Eastern. However, you would need a visa for China with this routing, since there is an intra china leg

Ok thanks, I’ll look from the cities Delta go to NRT and then Korean and China Eastern cities too. Sorry to put you on the spot or if anyone else who reads this that can possibly shred some light on this question it be appreciated. I have never connected in China, I see China Eastern has a JFK-PVG-MNL, do they simply issue you a transit visa? My fiancé is still a citizen of the Philippines would it be the same for her or is it more complicated?

You shouldn’t need a visa if you’re only connecting, right?

Here’s a tool you can use to check visa requirements though: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/vendors/default.aspx?i=TIMATIC (it’s a United tool, but the rules are the same for all airlines).
