Hello: I recommend you research and educate your readership on travelling with pets. The travel industry needs to be more open to pets. I travel 5-6 times a year and last year I purchased a dog. I chose a relaxed breed, non-shedding breed that would be under 20 pounds so I could take her into the cabin. She has been on one flight so far–from Halifax, NS to Toronto with FlyPorter. FlyPorter allows only two animals per flight and seats you at the very back of the plane. I sat beside another passenger with a dog. We agreed that it would not be good for the two dogs to be in carriers beside each other: they couldn’t interact, but could smell each other. A third passenger agreed to allow him to change seats. My dog, a cavapoo, is pretty amazing. She loves travelling, outings, adventure, people, other dogs and cats, but I am concerned about travelling with her. From puppyhood, I exposed her to as much as I could. She also receiving training. However, I am concerned. She will be cramped in the carrier for our next flight to Florida in a few weeks. Educate the industry and people on bringing pets! They are our family.

What do you mean by more open to pets? Airlines do allow pets on board and in the cargo hold, as long as certain requirements are met. Airlines have policies for emotional support animals and service animals.

It’s interesting that FlyPorter puts passengers flying with animals to the back of the plane – I hadn’t heard that before but I dont believe that’s the case for other airlines.

The thing is – some people take advantage of lax rules regarding traveling with pets, which is why we’ve seen more and more restrictions for pet travel. You’re always going to have that.

To be fair, people who are traveling with pets usually pay the fees and follow the rules. I think airlines have trouble with support animals which is why they are trying to tighten up the rules around those.
